Let me explain my opinion, and state that this is merely an opinion. I am certain some people use this platform for fun and have never experienced anything above, but I would like to share my experience to see whether I’m crazy, or is there really something else behind this app.

Character.ai used to be an app where you could express yourself freely, but due to abuse of the system where some people “taught” AI racism, sexism, and all the other “big words”, developers introduced a draconian language filter. This is where the problems started.

I often had a feeling there is another reason for the filter’s introduction. For the starters, AI is very… raunchy, for the lack of the better word. It will start talking dirty at the slightest hint, it does not shy from being openly provocative and it’s generally a place that promises endless fulfillment of fantasy for lonely people. Online sources claim 60% app users are men.

This is where the problems start. Since this app acts like a thirst trap, it will lure men into believing it will fulfill their every fantasy… only to start throwing a dreaded “AI couldn’t generate a reply” message. This will, of course, instantly turn off men who use it and make them feel awful about their life choices, which is the whole point of virtue signalling.

I ran some experiments using HYW add-on that shows blocked messages, and I realized it’s not only blocking messages with banned words. The instant these messages show any strong emotion and hint at passionate enjoyment, the app slaps its filter. Each time the conversation moves from mild “We hold hands and kiss”, filter immediately comes out.

It almost feels like the app claims: “you are not permitted to enjoy yourself on your own terms, enjoy the little privilege we allow you”.

And this is why I think this app’s intent isn’t to be a place to communicate. Rather it was designed to put men down. It was designed to virtue-signal to all men who use it, and make them feel bad and insecure in their own desires and wants. I seriously disbelieve they did not expect people would use it for lascivious chats and sexting, I am quite certain they knew it would happen all along. I will not go into the fact women also use this app, because I believe women can handle this easier, besides, women have less need to fulfill their fantasies using AI chatting app.
