Here's something people forget: Treat someone like a monster long enough, act as if they are the monster that you've pretended, and one day they may actually become that monster.

Let's say you have a 12 year old boy who is taught that being a boy is horrible and sinful. That little boys are always full of violent thoughts that are uncontrollable and that one day he might really hurt someone. He is taught at the same time that girls are pure and perfect in all ways, and there is nothing they could ever do to be as pure and good as a girl or woman. Let's say he gets that message every day for the first 12 years of his life. Any time there is a loud noise, or something breaks, or something happens in the home the little boy is immediately put to blame even if he wasn't present when it happened.

Can he overcome that treatment? Or is this how you create someone who has learned that he is violent and horrible, can never be anything else, and is now willing to act on those impulses?

This is what we are doing slowly to society. It's not 100% - not every message is as overt as "you, the boy or man, are irredeemable." It is at least a subtext in every movie or book or pop song. It's the subtext of how we talk about society, history, technology, art, politics, and any other subjects that are in part to do with people and the human condition. It's like the infrasound rumble of a factory that puts a whole town on edge, but in this case only men hear and react.

I won't speak for anyone else here but I've heard that subtext my entire life. Sometimes it's subtle. Sometimes it's overt.

But - do you know where that subtext is wholly absent? Any of the "toxic masculinity" media outlets that exist. The Joe Rogans and Andrew Tates of the universe, the MAGA people, the Crypto and AI guys. If you go hang out in those spaces for a few hours, you can experience what it's like to not be the bad guy for five minutes. If you stay, if you join that subculture, you can almost forget what that subtext even sounds like, and forget that it exists.

Is it paranoia to hear that everywhere I go? Maybe. Maybe it is, and maybe I should talk to a therapist about it. The problem is that they aren't safe - that same underlying hum of hate for what I am, but they have the power to weaponize that hate through medicine (and, if you are in the US, take all your money in the process).

It helps to have spaces like this subreddit, where you can acknowledge it, where nobody gaslights you about it. That simple acknowledgement is freeing, because you can realize that it's just the projection of other people's irrational and unwarranted fears flowing, unstoppered, through society like some sort of miasma. Once understood, you almost become immune to it.
