This happens all the time and is an ongoing issue that has been swept under the rug. I'm a disabled veteran myself, six years active duty as an airborne ranger combat medic paratrooper. I gave blood my blood for this country, literally.

There is no fix for the VA health care system. It is broken beyond repair. It is being kept alive as an employer and economic stimulus for those who work at the VA. It should be shut down, and then we should give all veterans, disabled or not, access to healthcare in the private industry.

Here is my current situation. I've waited about 8 months to get an MRI for an injury the army med boarded me for. Even though I had full records of my injury, they wouldn't diagnose me. I came to my first VA visit and was taken off all of my medications instantly. I was on morphine and OXY as I had broken my hip in three places, and shattered my acetabulum. That is the big ball on top of your femur that goes into the hip socket. Very, very painful injury that required several surgeries, that were equally as painful. Needless to say, I was dependent on my pain meds. When I came to my first appointment, the doctor told me I was fine, and proceeded to take me off all of my meds, including my pain killers, and my psych meds as well. I had bad PTSD when I got out. Mostly had night terrors and took lexapro, it worked pretty good to be honest. Anyways, doc takes me off everything, saying he needed to make the diagnosis before he proceeded with treatment and prescribing meds. So, after two years on high doses of opiods, he took me off. I got so sick, I ended up in the psych ward because the emergency room I went to recommended I be cared for under supervision. I kept having siezure, that's why I went to the ER. I was in SSRI, opiod, and benzo withdrawal all at the same time. To say I felt miserable would be an understatement. It was hell. That's the only word that comes close to describing the state I was in. Instead of treating me as a normal patient, I was then deemed a drug seeker, and sent to addiction treatment. Addiction treatment kicked me out, and said I was a mismanaged pain patient, and to go back to my primary care, or to go to the pain clinic. I went back to the pain clinic. Remember, there has been zero effort to actually fix my injury up until this point. It was all passing me around from clinic to clinic, from doctor to doctor.

After a year of being passed around the clinic's, I finally got a PA who seemed to care. He ordered an MRI to see what was going on in my hip. It took me 8 months to get said MRI. See, what they do now, is schedule for an appointment in less than 30 days, as that is now the law. So, they just call you after 28-29 days, and say that they need to reschedule. This happened six times, until I made a congressional complaint. Then, magically, I finally got my MRI. Now, I've been waiting for over six months, to see my orthopedic doctor to give me a treatment plan or do surgery again.

This doesn't even cover the other issues I've had with them. Another that sticks out is the claims process. It took the VA almost 3 years to add my daughter as a dependent. They needed to file a form that was literally 2 boxes with checkmarks, took 3 years to file it.

We use to see this on the news all the time. I promise you the problem is still just as bad as ever. All that has happened, is we get appointments in 29 days, instead of 30. Then, the media spins it as, the VA finally has its wait problem under 30 days! They just leave out the part where it is now 29 days, or the fact they will schedule you for under thirty days, with the intention of rescheduling you at a later date. One day they actually told me the MRI machine had broken when I showed up for my appointment. I then asked the lady walking out of the clinic, right in front of the person who said that, what she had done, and she says, I just had my MRI done. Then, I turned around, and spoke to the people in the waiting room. Who is here for their MRI today? Half raised their hands. Then I told the people in waiting room what he told me. This was actually why I did the congressional complaint. I had it on video but my phone broke and I never uploaded it. Dumb, I know. I did have it long enough to support my claim in the congressional complaint process.

TLDR, the VA is broken and needs to be shut down. People are dying, and not recieving healthcare they are contractually obligated to get, to save someone else's job, who probably never served. Shut it down, and give us access to private healthcare. It's a very easy fix. We won't do it, because the VA employs too many people.

I may be downvoted for this, but women are veterans, too, making this somewhat of an odd post for Men's Rights forum? Am I missing something?
