Maybe I’m being thick, but I’m not quite sure what the relevance is of this to the subreddit.

Also, a second point is that the findings miss out some key details:

  • Is this first marriages (for both partners) only, or second, third, n marriages as well?

  • At what age were these marriages taking place?

Two divorcees marrying one another who are both aged 42, say, are going to make a difference to the likely longevity of that second marriage compared to a 23 year-old guy marrying an 18 year-old girl straight out of high school, isn’t it? Likewise two 25 year-olds getting married are statistically more likely to end in divorce than a 65 year-old man marrying a 58 year-old woman for the second, third time or whatever.

This is always the issue with marriage studies. I've seen very few that correct for all the variables that seem obvious to me.

Strange.

Historically the best marriages had a about a 5 year age gap with the woman being younger.

For crissake, Phil. You're expanding your Death of Sex fearmongering to men as well? I don't get it. We now have drugs for this, if it presents as an issue for either partner in a lifelong marriage. But I doubt the sixty-year-old guy who was staring down my blouse on the bus today is taking Viagra. He just wasn't obese or otherwise medically compromised, and I'm not ugly, and whaddya know, he's still interested.

How old are you?

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Old enough, and married long enough, to have noticed that sex gets better in a good marriage when the nonstop pressure of childcare eases off. I'm sure there is some sort of slowdown coming up for both of us at some point, in sex as in all else, but my grandmother is 85 and says you're full of shit.

What's the point in older men hooking up with women who are set in their ways but are close to their own age for the last few years of his, life have little sex and what to be maintained? Not when he can have a couple of young fresh women willing to do anything sexually for money during the same period?

[–]IronJohnMRA 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point is not to benefit men at all, but rather women entirely. The purpose of the "Marrying someone your own age", is to make sure women always have an advantage in life. Early on women have an advantage given their youth and beauty. Later on, they don't and men do. If the proponents of this idea can get older men to surrender their power to older women, then women will always be in a superior position. And vice versa as well.

I'm disappointed it didn't go higher. I'm curious at what age difference the percentage starts dropping because the elder spouse dies.

"Lasting marriage", or as I like to call it, "Hell".

Thanks, but no thanks.
