What all three examples have in common is a code of honour. The Titanic men were obeying the social code of chivalry; the firefighters were obeying a professional code; and the Fukushima men are obeying a cultural code of endurance –gaman –in the face of certain injury or death.

Dying because of your gender is immensely different from heroism. Most the men on the titanic had to die. It wasn't heroic instinct that prevailed on the Titanic, it was social order (women live men die).

Or ya, and before Ms. Kay calls her privilege (actually an atrocity) something heroic she should also say that the women on the Titanic far out survived the children on the Titanic. The overall survival rate for men was 20%. For women, it was 74%, and for children, 52%. How you call men and children dying over women (including older women) heroic I have no idea.

April 14 is the 99th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Most of the survivors were women and children: 75% of women and almost all the children were saved as against 20% of the men. The skewed figures are no coincidence. Most of the women and children were saved because the men on board consciously elected to sacrifice their own lives for them.

It wasn’t an instinctual decision. Under threat of imminent death, both men and women panic. In the sinking of the Lusitania, for example, of the 639 who escaped, it was a question of sauve qui peut.

Yep, its our culture that is screwed up.
