At risk of being shouted out of the sub, I thought I’d bring up what seems to be a sensitive subject, for the sake of my own knowledge.

I’ve noticed a handful of posts recently discounting the values of chivalry. Some people have stated that it’s a socially engineered construct designed to make men serve women in a variety of ways. I’m sure this is a power common topic.

While I’m sure there’s truth to that, I’m not understanding what the difference is between being chivalrous, versus simply being kind. A lot of the examples, such as “paying for a partner’s meal,” or “holding doors open for others” strike me simply as polite gestures that people should probably be doing anyways, no? My boyfriend and I pay for eachother’s meals, is this different?

Is there some expectant nature that women exhibit that defines the term? I don’t think I’m quite getting it, and I’d genuinely like to understand better 😬
