Let's assume a man and a woman, each with no children, work the same hours in the same role, for the same number of years, and retire at the same age (I know women retire earlier at the moment but this is due to be phased out). They both live to average life expectancy so she receives an extra three years’ pension over him (21 vs 18 years). It seems on the face of it that the system favours women over men. Even more so with couples because she'll get his pension when he dies.

But if you do a search on this, all you'll find is article after article claiming it's women that have it worse. They add together all the pensions and see that overall men receive more. The argument is the same as the pay gap. Women tend to work fewer hours, do less overtime, prefer part-time employment and work in less dangerous, lower paid roles. So they pay less contributions and get lower pensions.

So my question is am I missing something? Is there some reason this isn't thought of as a men's rights issue?
