How accurate are RAINN statistics?

RAINN used biased survey information as a measurement as crime rather than actual crime data. They do the same with a claimed low conviction rate. They take their biased survey data and divide it by the number of convictions to strive at a low conviction rate, but of course their calculation has nothing to do with actual conviction rates.

I can’t speak to their DV stats, but multiple studies show women initiate as much or more DV as men.

At least some of the RAINN rape stats are based on a definition of rape as unwanted penetration, similar to the CDC definition of rape. So they're basically crap.

A lot of municipalities keep very incomplete statistics. There are also laws in place regarding the kinds of statistics that different municipalities can and cannot keep.

A complaint is made. It is either a true complaint, or a false complaint. The complaint is either pursued or not pursued. The pursued case either results in a conviction or plea bargain, or it is unsuccessful. As well, there are SA's for which no complaints are made.

For the most part, the statistics that are kept are for pursued cases that either result in a conviction or plea bargain. In some municipalities, statistics are also kept for unsuccessful cases. In very few municipalities, statistics are kept for complaints that are deemed so frivolous that they aren't pursued. And of course, no statistics are kept for SA complaints that are never made.

From this very incomplete data set, RAINN and other organizations try to paint a picture of reality. But of course, the data is so incomplete that it's difficult to paint an accurate picture of the landscape, so the picture that *is* painted tends to reflect the politics and biases of person or group painting the picture.

One reason that #Metoo was such a watershed moment was that the sheer volume of stories painted a picture of SA and SH that gave ample credence to painted landscapes that presented these as ubiquitous problems.

And while there are certainly numerous examples of false accusations that have achieved media prominence, there hasn't been any sort of #Metoo moment for falsely accused men that would lend credence to the viewpoint that false accusations are similarly ubiquitous. There also hasn't been that kind of moment for men who have been the victims of women.
