White Ribbon is just another feminist hate campaign. They've just conscripted men that loath other men and hate their masculinity.

Yep. It's built right into the foundations. I read the local WR trust document. They state that domestic violence is caused by gender inequality.

This article isn't a complete loss cause. It does point out that a restrictive 'man box' can be detrimental to men. But it's missing a few key points:

1) Many of the traits ("Be tough. Be a leader. Be stoic. Be athletic. Be strong. Be self-sufficient") in the 'man box' are actually desirable in most people. The problem isn't those traits but when they are enforced absolutely rather than in correct context.

2) In my experience, the 'man box' is enforced more by women than by other men - women generally want to date a 'manly man', and not having these traits makes a man less desirable, and once in a relationship, female partners tend to expect their men to show these traits and dislike it when men deviate from the 'man box'. The author almost acknowledges this by pointing out that the 'man box' includes "Be a 'lady's man'. Have a big penis. Sexually satisfy women", but shies away from directly implicating women in the problem.

3) For me, the greatest tool a man has to overcome the restrictions in the 'man box' is already part of him: self-sufficiency. Us men are raised to find our own way and be confident in ourselves. We just need to take the next step and be willing to stand up for ourselves.

So yes, I'll be tough, be a leader when I have to, be stoic, be athletic, strong and be self-sufficient. I'll be empathetic and creative, because these traits help me understand people and help me succeed in life. Anyone, like the article author, who tells me those are 'feminine traits' can go get f**ked. They aren't - they are human traits. And if I really need it, I'll reach out and ask for help. There's nothing unmanly about that, it's simply common sense. I won't pander to women and I won't accept being treated by badly by women, like I have been in the past. I won't accept that women are unable to abuse men, I won't accept collective guilt for the actions of other men, or that women necessarily "have it worse" than men. And I'll act 'masculine' when I want to. I'm glad for the 'man box' because that has made me who I am, and I'm happy being that person.

I have a theory that ‘toxic masculinity’ is most prevalent in young men who lacked a masculine role model. So they are left trying to piece together their masculinity without the whole picture. ‘Toxic masculinity’ is the absence of a bunch of masculine traits that balance out the other traits

You do have a point. I agree that some men express their masculinity in unhealthy ways, probably because they haven't picked up the traits that allow them to do so. (I refuse to use the term ‘toxic masculinity’ though, as I find that using it inevitably leads to connotations that masculinity itself is toxic).

I think 'masculine' traits can also be detrimental in other contexts too, particularly if they taken to an extreme. An obvious example is men remaining stoic when it is unhealthy for them to do so. We need to build a society where men feel safe to seek out help when they need it. Telling men that they should "talk about their feelings more" is the wrong way of doing this. Perhaps a better way is promoting healthy friendships between men, and the comradery that comes from these friendships would allow men to seek help and advice when they really need it.

stoic when it is unhealthy for them to do so.

The critical point is 'when it is unhealthy'. Sometimes being stoic is the best thing to do. I want paramedics to be stoic on the job.

Yes. I actually see that happening already. There was an article about how guys are starting to prefer 'bromances' to romances a while ago.

I think the other thing to consider is government programs to support men. Social change comes from the bottom up and the top down. A clear message from the government that they care about men would contribute a lot of good to changing social attitudes.

I fantasized the other day of forming a polkadot ribbon day focused on womens abuse of children.

Women are the demographic most likely to abuse and neglect children after all.

So. My campaign would involve marches by and with the police and child care service workers. It would have posters telling women to sort out their mates when they hear them being abusive of their chicken. It would engage with all women's support agencies around the country and expect them to wear and distribute the ribbons during the day but also through the year. As well as attend marches.

The men would stand back and smile at them, asking them to overcome toxic femininity and decrying those that don't join in the effort. Rewarding those that do become champions for the cause with praise.

Abusive? You mean like plucking their feathers off? :/

It's so telling when an article doesn't allow comments from readers.
