As the father of a sixteen year old girl, and having been friends with Tanya Smith as a kid myself, I do applaud the 'better safe than sorry' mentality here. I would be hard-pressed to blithely stand by in a situation where anyone was that eager to take a teenager farther away from home, whether the teen in question was male or female, or the creepy person offering her a ride was male or female.

That being said, the woman outright saying, "You might end up dead," was blatant and needless fear-mongering.

Kids are the most at-risk population in North America. Kids go missing all the time, never to be heard from again, and the perpetrators can be male or female. Whatever your reasoning is, diligence pays off, and anybody who's ever lost a child can tell you that.

From the situation involved, she identifies herself as a runaway right off the bat, and the actor playing the truck driver hits upon some serious red flags right away. Openly flirting, immediate interest in whether her parents know where she is, yet complete disinterest in wanting her to contact them, and his near-immediate reaction of wanting to eject from the diner with her in tow... all serious red flags that if I were to witness first-hand, I would question too.

Although I would ultimately allow the girl her choice of what she wants to do, I would be sure to A.) Get the driver's information and B.) Make it clear that unless I hear from the girl, the police will be contacted.
