As a long-time fan of Real Time with Bill Maher, I've been watching his latest season with extra intrigue. Whenever we seem to be in especially sensitive times, he usually finds a way to discuss an issue in a way that's both balanced and funny. He's been doing it since his days on Politically Incorrect.

Lately, he's been talking a lot about the anti-harassment movement, both during New Rules and with his panel. He says he's a supporter of #MeToo, but only to a point. He's been pretty vocal at criticizing the kind of extreme, regressive attitudes that got Matt Damon in trouble last year. And while I find his points fairly concise, I can't help but worry.

Maher is already a target. Last year, he got into a lot of trouble when he dropped an n-bomb on his show. As a result, he has avoided the topic of race at all costs. I worry that something similar will happen as he continues talking about the anti-harassment movement. It only takes one bad joke, one accusation, or one misstep to draw a hate mob.

I'm sure he's aware he's walking a fine line by talking about these issues, but I think he's underestimating how small the margin for error is. The more he talks about this issue, the more he risks saying something that'll ruin him.

As a fan of his, I don't want that. However, a part of me still wants him to talk about these issues because he tends to say the things that need to be said. I thought I'd open a discussion here because I've seen him come up in other posts. Should he continue talking about this issue? Or is he risking too much?
