She didn't say them being the same is diverse. She said they could be diverse even if they had the same race and gender depending on their background. For example, if some had to struggle coming from a foreign language where they didn't know the language, or others were born into poor families while others were born into rich ones, or some had single mothers others intact families and others still single fathers. You can imagine their experiences would be completely divorced from each other. As such, there would be a diversity of experiences, though their race and sex are the same.

Also, even her backpedaling seems reasonable. She avoids outright saying "we want more of these groups" or anything like that. And she mentions opportunity and access. If you ask me, I suspect she is going to be rather fair on the issue. And given the language, if she tries to get in more women and minority groups, she may do so through less objectionable means (like the methods that Damore posed for getting more women into tech, ones that do not discriminate against men or women but still make it more appealing to women).

9 protected characteristics in the UK:

age disability gender reassignment marriage or civil partnership pregnancy and maternity race religion or belief sex sexual orientation.

Only 3 of those don’t apply to white men.

Diversity shouldn’t automatically mean women or non-whites. 12 white men can bring a much more diverse experience that a 50:50 split of men/women or whites/non-whites.
