I'd like to ask what this community thinks of Mark Sanford.

For those who don't know, Sanford was an up-and-coming GOP governor and former congressman from South Carolina. Unfortunately, word got out about how he was cheating on his wife with an Argentinian mistress and had to suspend any political ambition. He ended up divorcing his wife and proposed to his mistress. Now he's running for the vacant House seat for S.C.'s 1st district. He has been hoping to run a campaign based on atonement and apology for his so-called mistake. His opponent is Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, Stephen Colbert's sister, running for the Dems. Many are seeing this race as a race between a woman, and a "lousy, woman-hating" man.

Personally, I'm not going to judge each figure based on party-alignment. What I would like to say is that I believe Sanford has done the right thing: he owned up to his affair, divorced the person he no longer felt any attraction to, and is now engaged to a woman whose company he really does seem to enjoy. I would go so far as to say that this same thing would not be an issue were Sanford a woman: many would take it much easier on her, and make it seem as if she had done so, were she unsatisfied with her marriage and her "lousy" husband. In this case, the man's morality is being challenged, simply because he decided he would rather spend his time with someone else.
