One of the arguments frequently made by MRAs is that the difference in healthcare spending on female and male-specific cancers shows that society cares less about male-specific cancers (or -occasionally - that feminist groups have an easier time lobbying for increased healthcare spending on their specific causes).
After researching the issue, I think the evidence is quite clear that routine screening for male-specific cancers is actively harmful to men, whereas the routine screening of women over 55 for female-specific cancers is only somewhat harmful. I have plenty of evidence for this (obviously), but to summarise it very quickly the chance of a false-positive on prostate cancer detection tests is very high, and the chance of something going very badly wrong during treatment is also very high without significantly changing absolute morbidity (except possibly in males aged 50-55 for which the data is inconclusive). With breast cancer the chance of false detection is somewhat lower, the treatment (radical mammectomy) is very damaging but the change in absolute morbidity is apparently statistically significant. The important phrase here is a 'type II medical malpractice' - treating conditions that don't exist, or treating conditions that do exist with an unjustifiably risky operation - and it happens more frequently with prostate-cancer treatment than breast-cancer treatment, because prostates are harder to correctly diagnose and treat.
So assume my figures are correct, and screening for gender-specific cancers is damaging to the gender being screened...
1) If I am correct that screening harms men, should the difference in gender-specific screening be a men's rights issue even if feminist groups continue to lobby for increased breast-cancer screening funding?
2) If I am correct that screening is more beneficial for women than men, but incorrect that in absolute terms it is harmful for both groups, then do any MRAs object to apportioning healthcare spend such that those groups who benefit more per dollar receive more treatment-dollars?
