The wage is certainly real in the sense that men earn more than women on average. A big compinent of this is the fact that most higher earning fields are dominated by males.

So why do women work in lower paying careers?

Likely part of the reason is that employers have a bias against hiring women, making it more difficult to obtain a career in these fields.

This is certainly not the only factor, but it does appear to be a discriminatory factor that could be influencing the wage gap.
