Firstly what the fuck does it even mean? Whenever we get a feminist or troll or whatever here we always get told that some masculinity is toxic and some isn't.
even (lol) wikipedia doesn't get it
The term toxic masculinity is used to refer to toxic manifestations of traditional masculinity (e.g., physical violence)
is the definition of it.
Well... what about when we use our manly traditional masculinity violence to... defend a small child from an abusive parent or get in a fist fight with a bully that was making my life hell? Watch some hollywood movies or read any books. Most have a "toxic" version of masculenity with this definition.
The extended definition includes this
Traditional stereotypes of men as socially dominant, along with related traits such as misogyny and homophobia, can be considered "toxic" due to their promotion of violence, including sexual assault and domestic violence. Other stereotypically masculine traits, such as self-reliance and the stifling of emotions, are correlated with increased psychological problems in men such as depression, increased stress, and substance abuse. Scholars argue that the socialization of boys often normalizes violence, such as in the saying "boys will be boys" with regard to bullying and aggression.
From this you would be thinking that men would just beat the shit out of each other for showing any feminine traits (and then beat women who are feminine of course) but as we all know here that's just not the case.
Some of the nicest people I've met have been through martial arts. A hobby where you either submit someone (by choking them, nearly breaking their bones etc) or batter them until they can't keep trying to batter you.
Obviously if masculinity is toxic then these men would be the absolute worst, they should beat their girlfriends and wives at high rates and just take that violence out on everyone.
Anecdotally not from what I can tell. Many martial artists I know (like myself) are or were broken people.. yes that's right, lots of women do martial arts too. Lots of abuse VICTIMS do it. Lots of bullying VICTIMS do it too.
By classifying physical violence as toxic we are basically calling all superheros examples of toxic masculinity. All sports figures other than like tennis players, golfers and card players. Hell we are even calling video game protagonists for the most part toxic.
Why?
What role models are left for little boys when the role models that punch through some of their problems aren't allowed anymore? Who do they turn to for guidance when they meet problems they can't reason with or overcome in nonviolent ways?
Hell I used to think things like "what would insert superhero do" when doing HOMEWORK and still do. It gives me the extra oomph to get through the damn stuff because I don't like it and getting angry at it is helpful to me.
If even stuff like that isn't allowed I would exhibit what I consider toxic behavior. Mainly actual violence or, more likely, going into a shell and not coming out.
That's right, men are more likely to just shell up than attack people. But wait, that's toxic masculinity too BECAUSE IT HURTS MEN.
So, they take your role models, and then they take your hiding space. Wonderful. If I wanted to create a situation where men would become MORE violent I couldn't imagine one better. Take the stress relievers and poke them when they try to run away and hide.
