They can serve you either at your home, your place of business, or in person. So, if you plan to be out of the state, be prepared for them to "serve" you without you necessarily getting the paper.
For the love of god answer the complaint.
Hire a lawyer, who can draft the answer pretty quickly, but you will likely have to go to court in person. You can argue lack of personal jurisdiction, but that'd just be more expensive.
If you fail to do the above, remember that you have a deadline to appeal the decision, don't blow it off.

How should I go about getting a lawyer? Should I get one in Virginia, or in California? Does it matter?

Being Military, you actually have a pretty nifty resource many other men lack: your friendly JAG peeps. One of their responsibilities is helping servicemembers with legal matters. Talk to your CO and ask how you go about setting up a meeting with a JAG officer. If, for whatever reason, that doesn't pan out, you get a bit of extra luck by being stationed in Virginia. GMUSL, in Arlington, runs a clinic (law students working under the supervision of practicing attorneys) providing legal assistance to servicemembers.

No matter what route you take, even if you go for a private attorney, do it now. The more on top of your shit you can be, the better off you'll be. If it is your child, you'll be in a better position to assert your rights as a father (and not get 100% screwed by the family court system). Alternatively, if you're not the father, it'll save you from 100% getting screwed by the family court system. In fact, all outcomes with a lawyer point to you having a better chance of not getting 100% screwed, so get on that shit.

TL;DR: In order of preference: Talk to your CO about meeting with a JAG officer; check out GMUSL's military legal assistance clinic; find a private practice lawyer.

I'm in the military too, and you should probably lawyer up. The last thing you want is your leadership up your ass giving you paperwork for some unresolved personal issues. Don't use the free base lawyer either-those guys are overworked and not likely to give a shit.

california makes you pay if you don't answer the complaint even if the notice is sent to the wrong address my advise is spend the money now it will be more if you wait
