Hi, So we have all heard the claim that 20% of women will be raped in their lifetime. I am a recent engineer graduate, so I decided to test it using a bit of math. The national crime victimization survey (NCVS) says that there are 0.4 per 1000 rapes every year. that is a probability of 0.04% per year. the average woman lives to be about 80 years old. I have taken these numbers and used them in a binomial probability distribution function. If you use 80 as the number of trials, .0004 as the probability of a rape "success", and 0 as the desired number of "successes," you get a 96.85% chance that a woman will not be raped in her lifetime. that leaves a 3.15% chance that a woman will be raped in her lifetime. anyone care to check my math?
