Looking for a female roommate isn't discrimination. Looking for a female tenant is, though. Are you sure you aren't seeing mostly the former?

They're renting a room in their house to someone, they should be allowed to be as picky as they like.

I dealt with this a few years ago trying to find a room as a college age male. 70% of the listings were for female only or for grad/professional only. Not one male only listing. I've lived with girls. They are certainly no more tidy or easy to live with than any of the guys I've lived with. Of course there is nothing that can be done, as people looking for a roommate can discriminate all they want under the law. I just wish attitudes on men would change so that this (among many other things) would not be a problem any more.

So? I'm 100% sure there were some men looking for other guys to room with. People like rooming with the same gender, we just get along better.

Don't worry, this kind of discrimination is also rampant in Russia. Given that these countries are very different, I would bet that it's all over the world.

How to combat it? Fight fire with fire. Women approach you with stereotypes? Counter with positive stereotypes.

Getting male tenant who spends less time in the bathroom will give more such time to them, and allow them more place to deposit their countless bottles with cosmetics.
A man can sometimes help with "manly" household duties, while women-only community would need to hire somebody.
Woman would hook up with many different men, letting them into the apartment, which is dangerous: who knows what these men are after? If the tenant is a straight man, however, he would only let harmless other girls inside, so having a man as a neighbor is safer in this regard.
In case of emergency, a man can protect the place more efficiently.
