Got this email called “Self help for rapists? WTF????” today. Not sure how the person got my email address, but I think the femisphere is flipping out about some man daring to put his opinions into a book. Here's the full text of the... the breathlessly self-righteous email.
I don't even know what to say. I'm shaking with anger. I can't even find the words to describe how I feel right now. I just got done reading a book that.... Jesus....... How do I describe it? It's like a how-to-publish-your-book book. It's motivation and inspiration for writers. Normally that's great. I'm a writer too and I like reading books for writers. But this book, from the very first sentence it shows its ugly and brutal heart. The book is called Write Like A Savage. And that gives it all away, doesn't it?
It basically tells writers that their job is to rape the reader.
Yes. I just wrote that. Now, I know there are some really despicable writers out there, but even those assholes want CONSENT from their readers, right? I mean, is there like some new group of sadistic writers who... in the words of the guy who wrote the book want to “force penetration” on their readers? That's not even the worst part of the book. I just honestly...... isn't reading a consentual act? Is he doing some new tactic to make nonconsent “sexy”?
So he's trying to make writing the equivalent of rape. If you write like a savage but you're supposed to rape your fans, then shouldn't the title be Rape Like A Savage? Writing as rape.
Then, of course, I checked out his Twitter profile. Thousands (yes THOUSANDS) of pictures of naked women, many of whom are shot in positions of weakness and being dominated by a man.
This is a whole new level of rape culture that I've never seen before. Now they're not just degrading women in songs and movies anymore. No that's too old school. Now they're saying that YOU SHOULD RAPE YOUR READER. I wonder how long it's gonna take for that to be a new standard among male writers. “Oh, you like my book? Let's go get coffee.” Then before long it's Morgan Gold Stirling's (he's the writer) patented “forceful penetration.”
This is just too sickening.
Aaanndd that's the shit diamond that I found in my inbox today. It led me to a realization that most of y'all have probably already realized years ago, but only now do I really get it: this outrage stuff is porn for women. I know people say that stuff like 50 Shades of Grey (and erotica like that) is porn for women, but I honestly doubt whether anything gets women half as wet as being outraged by a man. Maybe that's why they all like it so much when you pull their hair. Part of them thinks “dominate me. I'm your slave,” while another part is screaming “I am a strong female! I must not be treated in such a degrading way.” I think that's why the emailer got her panties so soaking wet. She read a book by a guy asserting his dominance. Or in other words, the book pulled her hair while pushing her head into the pillows.
