Senate Dems propose reviving moribund Equal Rights Amendment to Constitution

I submitted this article because I saw it over in /twox and started thinking about how this could effect men and realized that this amendment could actually have some positive benefits to me. The amendment reads: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." This opens up some interesting possibilities for the MR movement because the amendment could be used to attack any law that discriminates on the basis of gender. Think about how it could be used to combat against laws in family court that severely disadvantage men in custody and divorce courts, or in how men are treated more severely in criminal court than women. It could be used to challenge womens only scholarships or admissions quotas or hiring practices. Federal funding for health programs could not be based on gender. Funding for womens only domestic violence shelters would potentially be illegal requiring equal protection. The amendment would have serious consequences because it could potentially be used to force more egalitarian changes on the government on a number of MR issues. In effect many of the laws that I often hear complained about here would become unconstitutional. I would love to hear some other peoples opinions on the issue and how it could affect the MR movement in a positive way.
