Statistical Help Needed for Rape

Looking for non biased data sets used and statistics for Male and Female Rape Victims.

There are none. The large community based surveys either use methodologies that are known to undercount male victims severely or they outright lie and don't even count most forms of female-on-male rape.

Here are some stats on female-on-male victimization:

Almost 3% of college men reported forced sex and 22% reported verbal coercion in a heterosexual romantic relationship in the last year. Almost 2.3% of women reported forced sex and 25% reported verbal coercion. From: Predictors of Sexual Coercion.
95% of sexually abused youth in correctional facilities reported being abused by female staff. From Sexual Victimization in Juvenile Facilities, 2008-09
Among inmates reporting staff sexual misconduct, ~ 65% reported a female aggressor. From Sexual Victimization in Prisons and Jails Reported by Inmates, 2008-09
50% of homeless youth reported being sexually abused by a female. From It’s Not What You Think: Sexually Exploited Youth in British Columbia

Okay, after reading these comments, I have to step in. (Oh god, this is long, but it's worth the read if you're serious about this.)

As a men's right supporter, grad student who has focused on quantitative research, instructor for a statistics lab for two years, and currently item developer for a high-risk statistics test, I'm appalled at some of the comments that have been made here. I'm not going to give you specific studies or ways to dig those research up, because I want to point out a few things:

First of all, you don't ever just mock or abandon a study or an author simply because of his/her findings. It's poor practice and it flies in the face of empiricism and peer-review. On the flip side, don't ever just accept reports that support what you are looking for without criticism and critical-thinking. We've seen that's what most feminists group have done, and we can see the results of that strategy.

For the purposes of countering a wealth of skewed report analyses, one thing that you can do to stay the course is to present ALL sides of the research, with critical analyses on why the research has come out this way, rather than use it to support an agenda. This is merely a suggestion, I'm not forcing you to do this, I'm just saying that as a reader who wants to view this topic objectively, this might get my attention better than "hey look at this, look at how much MEN are suffering as well!"

That being said, here are some things to consider: This is a very sensitive topic, and thus difficult to investigate. Modern ethical committees such as IRB are anal about making sure the participants in the study are comfortable, relaxed, and unharmed in any way. I'm seeing comments that these are just "self-reports" or "surveys" with leading questions or too ambiguous questions or not enough questions etc. etc. etc. These are concerns in research, but there are legitimate reasons for doing it this way. You can't conduct an experiment and have people set up to be raped - that's unethical. You can't force people to report on their own traumatic events - that's unethical as well, and can cause more damage. Knowing this, studies in this area will always have flaws.

Also, consider the fact that these are based on earlier research, when women and rape was really a concern that needs to be investigated. So, yes, of course it will favor reports from female more, because that is who they targeted at the time. You need to look at why they chose the participants they did, asked the questions in that way, and how it fits into the overall picture of what THAT study was trying to accomplish. If you see something that does NOT align with that the study was trying to do, THEN you can criticize the hell out of it. When you do, stick to the facts and the methods, don't slip into feelings and personal biases on what YOU feel the study SHOULD be like.

tl;dr: All these studies will suck, best to just look at ALL sides CRITICALLY. Be more fair and balanced than some feminists who skew the research to support an agenda.

The way that feminists inflate these numbers is by broadening the definition of rape.

Take this study for instance.

On page 31 "verbal victimization" is classified as among other things:

Asked question about sex or romantic life when clearly none of their business.

False rumors about sex life with them or other people

and "pestering" is also considered a sexual assault.

Start with their sources and thats where you can gain some ground.

Take the Koss "study". You can google it and find all kinds of information so Im just going to summarize. Koss had to do several studies to get the "right" information. The first time she asked undergraduate women if they had been raped and not enough of them said they had. Lets not get into how bullshit it is to go into a study expecting an answer or how old this shit is (the study was commissioned by Ms magazine for fucks sake). So the first results wouldnt work. So this time she changed the questions to not just ask if girls had been raped because apparently they had been and just didnt know it (I mean what other logical choice is there? /s) So she would ask have had sex after deciding earlier that you didnt want to? Have you ever had sex after drinking? Have you ever gone out on a date thinking you definatley werent going to have sex and then did? Have you ever been pressured? Etc. i mean you can find the exact questions she asked. So faced with this NEW survey enough of them answered that these things happened to them that the 1 in 4 women will be raped during their college career. It was SO obviously bullshit that the respondents came out and said it was bullshit. Yes, thats right. The study missed the mark so far that even the people that helped came out seperately and said Koss was completely full of shit. Didnt matter.

So anytime you see Koss, just strike it out from your mind. Its sloppy and its bullshit.

Next lets do this one: ** Thoennes, Nancy, and Tjaden, Patricia. "Prevalence, Incidence, and Consequences of Violence Against Women: Findings of the National Violence Against Women Survey." U.S. Department of Justice, November 1998.

Now see that National Violence Against Women Survey? Lets hit that part. What they are trying to find out is how much rape is really going because the number of reported rapes is far too low to justify all this rape-funding and slut walks and violence against women act. So why arent there more rapes? Well they must be RAMPANTLY unreported. Well how can we figure that out? Well lets just call people and ask if they've been raped and then compare that to how many people report rape to the police. Then we'll know how unreported it is.

With me so far?

Ok so up until two weeks ago (or thereabouts) the FBI's uniform crime reporting handbook outright said men could not be raped, by definition. In fact they even had a little note that specifically said so in case some rogue law enforcement agency had a streak of fairplay. So men CANT be raped. ( google FBI uniform crime reporting handbook you can find this in every handbook at least up until 2004 which is the one they were using up until a few months ago) If a man is raped and reported it to the police they would count it as sexual assault (or just laugh at him, I mean thats always an option) and thats how they would report it to the FBI and the dept of justice.

Ok so youve got local law enforcement following this handbook and sending numbers the feds about how many women (only women) have been coming in reporting a rape.

Then youve got the dept of justice running their National Crime Victimization Survey (they also ran the National Violence Against Women Survey the same way so Im going to lump it here). What they do is they fire up the census computers to call people and ask them if they feel like they have been the victim of a crime. (yeah its a fucking computer) Ive come unhinged about this bullshit many times so Im going to stop here and bitch for a second. This morning on the freeway a guy cut me off and I had to swerve and nearly lost control of my car. I may FEEL like the victim of attempted vehicular manslaughter but nobody should give a shit. Secondly, I can park my car in the university president's assigned parking spot. I can then come back and find my car gone and FEEL like the victim of grand theft auto. Nobody should EVER give a shit. But if these surveys called me and if my head was up my ass I could tell them that Yes I did feel like the victim of a crime. See the problem here? Just because you feel like anything has no bearing on reality and every single time these surveys are referenced that caveat should be mentioned. Why do the crime victimization surveys have so much weight? Well they cost so much and require so much effort they've got to be gold and besides they're giving the people that make money off rape the data they need.

Ok so the victimization against women survey just asks more pointed questions. Here is there methodology so you can go over it for yourself and see what you think. (note the author, whatever). Ok so the survey asks MEN and WOMEN. They call men and ask if they feel like they have been a victim and some of them really have been just like women. But then they turn right around and compare this to the numbers reported by law enforcement. (in fact they actually interview more men than women)

Well holy shit! There is a difference (men are counted by the survey but they arent counted by law enforcement). So they take that difference and go "AHA! Just as I suspected women are getting raped all up in here and they are too scared to say anything." So they pass the Violence Against Women Act. Yes, you read that right. So thats where they get NEARLY EVERY SINGLE piece of information that says anything about "unreported rapes" its from one of those two surveys. So the fact that rapes against men dont count is, ultimately, what lead to the passage of the Violence Against Women Act to protect women from men.

I would look into research on sexual coercion. The problem I'm running into is, most of the research is written by Mary Koss, the same person that created the 1 in 4 statistic.

Found an article titled: Men's Reports of Nonconsensual Sexual Interactions with Women: Prevalence and Impact

I can't however find a free copy of it.
