No. Convictions must be based on proof beyond reasonable doubt. This is the only standard which is acceptable in a civilised country. Balance does not come into the matter for this or any other alleged crime.

I would really like to know what the overwhelming evidence of Varney being innocent that he says the police had was.

This case was to go to trial in four days. The allegation had been made for the past two years. Then, suddenly, the CPS who has prosecuted some of the most absurd cases, short of Mike Nifong and the US Army that I've seen, drops the case? And, the parents aren't upset with the CPS, but they blame the university for not supporting their daughter and causing her death because she had to face this man every day? Sounds like an equally likely possibility that instead of being a victim of rape she could have felt guilty that she falsely accused him of rape because he did not want to have a relationship with her. Having to face him every day, wanting him still, the rage within her because the feelings were unrequited, falsely accusing him, people believing that he was falsely accused and that she lied would cause any woman to break down, or might cause a BPD to just give up.

But, I wished the British media would do a better job at showing the evidence that indicates he was innocent because the actions of the CPS and the parents strongly suggest that he is. And, perhaps Varney did not show it. His demeanor appears to indicate an understand that he knew this woman was mentally disturbed. Perhaps, that could explain why he did not want a relationship with her, but isn't calling her an evil devil woman after she falsely accused him. Maybe out of respect for this woman, he does not want to sully her any further. But, the public should know the evidence particularly if it shows Law Enforcement sticking their head in the sand like an ostrich when confronted with exculpatory evidence.
