Pretty sure women have always been providers, just in a different way to men. Women have always been protectors of children(at least traditionally).

As for subservience/submissiveness, not only do women typically not want this in a man, most men do not want it either.

I also do not recall the tradition where either gender prostrated themselves like a slave before their master.
