At the start of the 20th century, in large parts of the world including UK, Canada and much (nearly all?) of continental Europe, most men also did not have the right to vote.

It was only after WWI and the massive military conscription of men who had no right to vote, that there was a big push to give all men the vote.

Many / most opponents of female suffrage both male and female, in opposing female suffrage, actually cited that women would be required to be subjected to military conscription, which they dd not want. Remarkably, women went on to vote for 100 years without a single female ever being conscripted to die in war. It's really quite remarkable if you think about it, the level of entitlement and special dealing.

I heard this sometimes also, but I've never seen a source for it. I've never heard it claimed that military service was ever a precondition for voting, except in Starship Troopers. And the US didn't have national conscription until the Civil War (though states had a requirement to serve in the militia, at least at times. Not that serving guaranteed you a right to vote.). During the Civil War, rich people paid for others to serve in their place, as was allowed at the time, and they weren't stripped of voting rights. Various groups were exempt from the draft without losing the right to vote, like conscientious objectors.

And, of course, by the late 19th/early 20th century (before WW1) men voted without any sort of conscription, as my understanding is required service in state militias was over by then.

The most you can say is that at one time, both voting and military service were part of the male gender role. But they weren't tied together, one wasn't conditioned on the other, and neither was universal.

Voting in Australia has never been contingent on signing up for a draft. The only time a draft has been used was during the Vietnam War, based on a birthday lottery system.
