I work in tech, and I’d guess it is even worse than any report can quantify since it is hard to determine who is overpaid or underpaid based on titles or experience alone.
But I have watched now as companies have been clamoring to hire more women in tech to avoid getting bullied by feminist groups and the even the government. But the rates of women majoring in computer science and engineering still hasn’t improved much, even with all the extra help they get.
So what happens? Management ends up hiring women who are engineer-lites and putting them into software positions, often outranking far more senior devs.
Engineering-lite means they may have took a few intro courses, but mostly know a little JavaScript, web design, graphics, search engine optimization - but absolutely not of the hard high level math and technical knowledge from upper levels.
And since they can’t keep up with the real engineers, they are shoved into management positions. And end up earning more.
Take a guess at how this impacts morale when a 35 year old senior engineer who’s been grinding away for years, never once being offered management positions or mentoring, is suddenly given a new female, 28 year old Media Arts grad as his new team lead, who’s assigning him tasks every day and being mentored by senior managers.
