but my mom, and two of my aunts got divorced and THEY never got alimony

Several possible explanations:

(1) They never asked for alimony; had an "amicable" divorce. Not all men will be so fortunate. It's basically up to the female what they want to try to take from him, and what not.

(2) Or they could have been primary or substantial wage earners.

(3) Also, often times a woman will negotiate in a divorce so she agrees to forgo alimony, but in exchange, she gets something else of value. So for example, she may get the entire house, the car, more than half the family assets, or more than half of the total retirement funds, and in return she gives up her claim to alimony. Many men are forced to give up a larger share of joint assets, or leave the ex-wife with basically everything, just because they want to leave the marriage without having to write support checks to another adult for years and years and years afterwards.

And note, alimony does not include child support. Child support is up and beyond that, and often far exceeds the cost of raising the child.

Alimony is money that a man is ordered to pay his ex-wife after divorce so she can continue to live at a level of comfort that she had become accustomed to during the marriage. It is outdated and antiquated and has no place in the world of equality we are trying to make, yet is still ordered in some cases where the man vastly outearns the woman in a relationship. It can even rarely be ordered to be paid from the woman to the man in cases where a woman vastly outearns a man.

But it is tax deductible. Child support is not.

It really depends on the laws where you live. In some states/countries, alimony is frequently awarded, and in others, it is very rare. It also depends on the length of the marriage, the relative incomes of each party, and other factors that vary according to local laws.
