I've never seen any studies on this, or single fathers in general. A few on how nuclear families do much better then a single mother does though.

No links handy but I've read conflicting material on this. If memory serves, some studies have indicated that the results are similar (negative); others have indicated that single fathers do quite a bit better. In the latter case it was suggested that (a) only "super-dads" get custody, so naturally they will do better and (b) men tend to make more money. I don't find those arguments particularly convincing; I think there is a real difference in the way men and women raise kids, and men may well be more necessary once you get beyond the toddler stage. In any case I think it's clear that a two-parent household with the biological father generally produces the best outcomes. I'm not saying that a single mother or a single father can't doe a great job of raising a child, but generally speaking you want both parents.

As for gay and lesbian adoption, well, I support the idea in principle but on the other hand I don't think anyone would have the balls to release a study indicating negative or less than ideal outcomes. If they did it would be buried. Perhaps a solution would be to have a "big brother" or "big sister" addition in such scenarios. But that would entail acknowledging the importance of men in child rearing, so it's a non-starter.

I've seen a brief description of the study DunesFrank mentioned, it was in a respectable source. The study defined several aspects of parenting which could be measured, and compared solo mums and dads. Men were significantly superior on the things measured.
Higher income was part of that. The men could provide a better house in a better suburb with better schools and facilities. They could afford specialist professional care, home help, nannies and babysitters. I didn't see the study itself, I don't know what they measured.

The superdad thing is obviously a factor. Courts give custody to the father in a very high proportion of cases where fathers ask, but these are a small minority of separations, about one in six I think. Those fathers will be a strongly biased sample.
I've known child protection social workers. They find solo dads relatively easy to work with, they are definitely the pick of the bunch. I don't imagine there will be statistics which show anything useful about male vs female parents because there are no male samples that are not very biased. You could match income and assets but motivation will still be different.
