It disturbs me because if something were to happen to my wife either by me or her we could face jail time on an accident. So not only would we be grieving the loss of a possible child but one or both of us could face jail time.

Have you ever thought that maybe it's not the politicians randomly pushing their agenda but in fact the people who vote for them are calling for this?

In some ways the idea of counting age from the last period makes a certain amount of sense, since it is at least potentially provable (whereas examination of the foetus is obviously impossible once it has been aborted and incinerated) and doesn't require trans-vaginal ultrasound (not sure if that is actually needed to be certain about the age at 18 weeks, but someone in /r/Feminism said it was).

However, it is a sneaky way to remove 2 weeks from the 20 weeks limit which is based on supposed developmental evidence (that it can feel pain at 20 weeks). It also fails to take into count those women with massively irregular periods.

EDIT: It seems that for all other purposes foetal age is measured from the last period too, so that makes this even more sensible.
