Both have nuggets of truth too.

It is true there is no intrinsic value to life, rather only the meaning that we create for ourselves. Unless you believe in a god of some kind you must concede this point.

All knowledge being based on what we cannot prove is also valid because who can genuinely say we have full knowledge of the human brain, let alone the universe? We simply don't. All knowledge is based on limited previous knowledge. We make assumptions based on prior assumptions.

You can see this pretty clearly in psychiatry, since we're talking about chemicals in the human brain - we have no idea how to fully map the human brain yet. Even with modern technology like MRI machines we're only beginning to make guesses and scratch the surface.

So if you go see a psychiatrist with a certain set of symptoms, then go see another one, odds are they will diagnose you differently. This is simply because there is no objectivity in their discipline at all. Despite their decade plus of school they have no idea how any of this stuff actually works.

Go ask a psychiatrist how depression is caused. They can rattle off a few theories but they can't tell you definitively. That's why SSRIs have a low success rate. They are based on a certain theory, that depression is caused by a lack of serotonin, and this as it turns out is not as open and shut as they used to think. Now the brightest minds are looking at ketamine and psychedelics instead. They're getting results, but again, you ask them why a magic mushroom trip can reset depression for a few months in some people they give you only theories. They truly have no idea.

Humans are scared at the thought of this. We like to think we have a full understanding of ourselves and the world around us but we just, well, don't.

So it seems for most of us we either make something up for comfort - in the past this was filled by blind faith in religion, these days it's blind faith in science - so we feel as if we know more than we do and we therefore give ourselves freedom from wondering about all this stuff.

You then have a minority who are either comfortable with uncertainty or those who dive in trying to find more truths for themselves in some form, whether it be through religion, philosophy, or science (I mean beyond simple belief, for example becoming a scientist or philosopher).

We all ultimately place faith in whatever we so choose because here be an area devoid of solid fact.

This is a big part of the reason that I stopped studying Psychology. During the academic study you are forced to accept things that not only cannot be backed up with evidence, but that are just fundamentally wrong.

I stopped studying it during the evolutionary psychology module as it just became absurd. To this day, no-one has ever been able to give me an acceptable answer to the question...if we are controlled by evolution, and our genes, and the desire to reproduce, and that is our sole guiding principle, then why do people sometimes do really selfless things that put them in great danger?

There is no acceptable answer to that question which results in the person engaging in the selfless act gaining an evolutionary advantage. Boy, I have heard some contrived bollocks trying to concoct one, but there isn't one. It's just clearly a selfless act, done out of kindness and empathy with another human being, that flies in the face of the genetic need to survive and reproduce.

It's just simply wanting to help someone else. A fucking 7 year-old would be able to identify that motive and behaviour. That's just one example. Another problem is that the whole subject, and particular the system within which its adherents operate, isn't intended to question the wider society.

They try to file you under a disorder and then treat the disorder, usually with drugs.

Microsoft Word was built to help humans write well formatted, legible and clear text. You don't doubt thats its purpose.

But sometimes the rules built into it in order to help it do that mean that when you delete "that line" all the formatting goes fucked up and all sorts of line breaks and crazy shit appear out of nowhere.

It's trying to follow the rules programmed into it, for the programmers ends (helping humans write well formatted text). But sometimes following those programmed in rules cause it to do something that absolutely does not help it achieve it's design objective.

There is loads more to it than this, of course. But thats the ELI5 version.

I accept that evolution occurs and can be observed at a cellular level.

The same cellular level that builds your brain, all it's neurons, and everything in it that is responsible for human behaviour.

I do not accept that when someone does something selfless it's because they gain some evolutionary advantage from it.

I wasn't saying it was to their evolutionary advantage. In the Microsoft Word example Word wasn't doing what it intended to either.

Evolution can be the cause of their behaviour, even if that behaviour isn't to their evolutionary advantage.

It's not to Lemmings advantage to run off the cliff, but no-one doubts that an evolutionary process gave them whatever it is that causes them to run off cliffs.

I cannot accept that because I have seen and witnessed people do things from which they clearly gained no evolutionary advantage.

That doesn't mean that they aren't behaviours at root caused by an evolved brain.... only that (like the Lemmings) evolved brains sometimes do things that wasn't their "programmers" intent.

No-one doubts that MS Word was built to help humans correctly format written language.... even when it fucks up and utterly misformats human language people recognise that this is it "malfunctioning" in regards to it's intended purpose.

This argument is like saying "I cannot accept that MS Word was written to correctly format language, as I've seen and witnessed it do things which clearly fucked up all the formatting in the document".

Yep. For real tho. I saw my fam recently because my mum likes to have me on family holidays even though I'm an adult and hey I'm not one to say no to free holidays, especially since the next one is looking like it'll be Canada. Their weed is the stuff of legend and they got legit dispensaries now. Fuck yeah.

But anyway on the recent holiday my mum could tell I was depressed (long story) and offered to pay for a psychiatrist and therapist privately.

And I just turned to her and I straight up said what's the fucking point? I know what my problem is, it's situational because my job is shit, being given more pills by a clueless twat in a fancy office is not going to do jack shit. A better job is what I need. I could see the psychiatrist and wrangle a script for some Xanax or something off him if I wanted but it still wouldn't actually benefit my mental health in any way. I'd just be getting faded.

At the time she was worried in large part because I was knocking back benzos like sweets so I just wanted to drive home the irony... like alright you're worried about my drug use so your solution is sending me to someone who will give me more drugs... for one thing where do you think I got the ones in my hand right now? Makes total sense 🙄

And sure enough just a few weeks later I was finally offered a new job which I shall be starting once my notice period is up and my mood is up big time and my benzo use is down big time. Because it never was because of anything except for my circumstances.

That said I am tempted, once I start this new job, to get some morphine off a private pain clinic. Easy enough to blag when most private doctors are just drug dealers for rich people anyway. Harley Street is just a short drive.

It's all a fucking joke though. I really don't see it as useful for anything except if you want easy access to pharmaceuticals.

What you're saying is completely true, unfortunately many people cannot recognise this. I don't know if it's because they're taught to trust doctors and authority in general, or if they just don't understand the subject, or possibly it's a combination of the two and other factors as well.

Unless you have some very serious psychological problem then you are the only person who can dig yourself out of unhappiness. I think even clinical depression cannot be solved by talking to someone and taking pills. You almost have to simply resolve not to be unhappy any more, or to do something about it, or both.

I went to see a counsellor once when I was younger, and I never bothered going back, because I just couldn't see how it was going to help. After I'd spent an hour talking about stuff that was irrelevant to this sympathetic person, I would still have to walk out of the door, into an often hostile and unforgiving world, particularly so as where I grew up is an especially tough place.

This is one of my favourite videos, and I knew I just had to get to the place that he's describing.

I read it, and the introduction where he described his own book as "his most important book"; ie. all of my books are important, but this is the most important.

Bombastic, tedious, verbose, poorly written. He can't write for toffee. I don't have any respect for him whatsoever.

I have my own views, I know that no-one agrees with them, I'm accustomed to that.

But I cannot accept that when someone engages in a completely selfless act that there is some sort of evolutionary explanation for this.

There isn't. It's bollocks. It's just an act of kindness that confers no evolutionary advantage, and that is nothing to do with genes or genetics.

I can see that because I'm not emotionally attached to the theory of evolution, I haven't staked my entire reputation and career on it, and I'm not a pompous twat with a massive ego, all of which applies to Dawkins.

I'm sure you're really nice, though, I just don't have any respect for him at all.
