I say mostly, because according to Jungian psychology, there IS a connection to feminine and masculine aspects of the psyche, though the terms aren't the same as they're traditionally used. Men have an unconscious "feminine" side while women have an unconscious "masculine" side.

I think the most practical way to detect and understand them is via projection. People do it all the time with porn, anime, cartoons, and even celebrities. It can even be done with MLP characters. It just takes something with specific human qualities to trigger it.

I'm not sure how that comes into play with sexual preference/orientation.
