Well there will always be people on the bottom. That's true of any hierarchy. But if everyone was literally doing their best, then obviously the country would be very wealthy, and that would benefit everyone, even those on the bottom. In fact, we see this effect even though there are many people who do not choose to work hard, make good decisions, improve themselves etc. The standard of living for even the poorest people in free market economies is much higher than the average for people in planned economies.

Luckily though, we don't really have to worry about the supposed ethics of a system where wealth isn't actually possible for everyone, since no society of human beings would ever universally adopt the behaviors that lead to wealth. There will always be people who choose to succeed, and people who accept less for themselves.

Yes, and at the same time, they also get to choose whether or not they are the ones who do those jobs. They could improve themselves, make better decisions, and work harder, and they wouldn't be the people doing those jobs. But there will always be people who don't do those things, and accept a place at the bottom.

If everyone was suddenly a hard charging, go getting, try hard, then we can reevaluate the system. In fact, if such a fantasy ever became a reality, then communism would work fine. But that isn't the reality, and it doesn't.

The free market allows anybody who wants success and is willing to do what it takes to succeed, to do so. And we don't have to worry about whether or not it would be possible for everyone on the planet to do the same thing, because most people on the planet will never try.

You really, really don't make all of the choices. Not at all. The fact you think that tells me you have a lot to learn about how the world works.

I live in a country where the government is actively putting kids into poverty at record rates, slashing funding for schools and the health service, literally starving disabled people to death in some cases. Social mobility is at an all time low, and there are areas of the country where teachers are buying children clothes and food because their parents literally cannot afford to clothe and feed them themselves, even when they are working. There are nurses using food banks for fuck's sake.

How is a child or a teenager supposed to change any of that? The answer is that they are not. It's by design - to keep the poor poor and the rich rich(er). I know, I grew up a poor kid - and do you know how I turned my life around, financially? I didn't. I live 300 feet from the house I grew up in, in a socially and economically deprived town that has a large number of unemployed people. I'm lucky, I earn above minimum wage, just about.

And before you think I live in some third world shithole, this is in the United Kingdom.

A first world country that can easily afford to fund all of these things, become a prosperous and decent enough country not to starve their most vulnerable in society, and yet it doesn't because the fuckers in charge think that people just don't work hard enough, because if they did they'd be able to clothe and feed their children. The fact is though, people do work hard enough and still can't afford to. So, they turn to the state for help, who then rejects claims to social security benefits peopler are entitled to in the hope they'll give up.
