As a victim of domestic violence, let me tell you, you're in for a shitshow. More men need to come forward and realize that "manning-up" isn't the ability to take abuse, it's the ability to stop it.
Law enforcement should always be a last option in any situation (depending on severity) but learn that your FIRST line of defense is to record EVERYTHING. Any threatening messages, stalker behavior or attempts to escalate things physically.
Photograph any marks or bruises and always try to get them to admit to the assault (surprisingly easy with text messaging) before bringing it to the police.
Also witness will help GREATLY with your case because you're attacker will lie their ASS off... that is, until a judge presents them with evidence, then their story will spiral in another direction.
Good luck to any man who has the misfortune to have to deal with this. Realize you deserve better and GET OUT.
Good luck.

Edit for the gold.

Without any evidence, you can expect to get arrested if you report her for domestic violence.

Men are more likely to get arrested when reporting domestic violence, than the woman who's been violent towards him.

I had an ex who, after breaking up with her, literally punched herself in the face repeatedly to try and give herself a black eye. She said she was going to call the cops and tell them it was me and to this day I still remember her exact words. She said "who the fuck do you think they'll believe, you or me?!" I ran out of the house, drove to a friend's place and crashed there for a night until she calmed down.

Sad thing is, I guarantee she was right. If the cops came, I would've definitely been arrested.

This happened to a cousin of mine while he was at work. Here in Canada our courts have zero tolerance laws on domestic violence - even though his time sheets and the company's surveillance proved he couldn't have been there to hit her, he still went to prison.

There's this really good discussion panel about the justice system in Canada, put on by a bunch of lawyers. They talk about cases they / colleagues have dealt with in the past - they talk about cases where men call 911 because their spouse is coming at them with a knife; they get cuffed even when they've been cut / stabbed. They talk about one such case where the guy was cuffed while he literally still had the knife stuck in him - he was arrested because he pushed her away from him, which the bruise on either of her shoulders corroborated.

Jesus fucking Christ Canada is a joke. Zero tolerance never helps, never helped in schools with fighting and bullying and it won't work for domestic violence. Awareness and harsh court rulings WITH proper evidence is the only way to stamp this shit out.

[–]MofuckaOfInvention 38 points39 points40 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"I get weary of this zero tolerance bulls--t. It's annoying. To begin with, it's a fascist concept; it's what Hitler and Stalin practiced. It allows for no exceptions or compassion of any kind. All is black and white-no gradations. But even more important, it doesn't solve anything. The use of such a slogan simply allows whichever company, school or municipality is using it to claim they're doing something about a problem when, in fact, nothing is being done at all and the problem is being ignored. It's a cosmetic nonsolution designed to impress simpletons. Whenever you hear the phrase zero tolerance, remember, someone is bulls--ting you."

God he was a fucking sage back in the day. I never found him very humorous, but every word he says is gospel for how the world is supposed to be.

I've been in jail for an ex lying to the cops.

[–]sleazypornoname 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am lucky that the police got to witness it and then she decided it would be a smart idea to start kicking the cops. They took photos of my bruised arm, the bruises were in the shape of her hand as she grabbed on and would not let go. The female cop was really good about it. Not the male though. If it was just him it would have been different. My ex gave me a copy of the arresting interview and the male cop kept asking if I had hit her. Over and over. To her credit she told the truth. Fuck that guy. I went to her court date, she got off with good behaviour. Never saw her again. Heard she died. On the needle she was crucified. Baby that was years ago. I left it all behind.

[–]Reality_Facade 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I called the cops because my ex girlfriend pulled my fillet knife on me and cornered me in the kitchen. No one got arrested, but I was taken to the hospital against my will because she told the cops I had threatened to commit suicide. Spent 12 days there, got a bill of over $4,000 and went home temporarily because I'd nowhere else to go. She then falsely accused me of rape. Luckily evidence was on my side for that, but that doesn't change the fact that the accusation alone ruined many aspects of my life.

[–]G-man88 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Oh, someone told us you're a danger to yourself, lets just forcefully restrain hold you against your will, and then bill you for "treatment" you never asked for."

This is a concept that's straight bullshit.

I can't up vote this enough. I was abused as a kid by my father and his wife at the time. She was the worse of the two and a lot of the physical and mental abuse wouldn't fly if there'd have been a way to record it. My piece of shit father passes it off to this day, but I recently found a police report and case worker's follow up from the one time my mother intervened, and it's undeniable.

[–]Liquor_Wetpussy 75 points76 points77 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The lucky thing is, all these men being abused by the women in their lives have a large network of shelters and support systems thanks to the efforts of feminist organizations that care for men's issues also. /s

I used to be an apartment complex security guard here in Las Vegas and I used to see stuff like women trying to run over their boyfriends with cars and wives trying to knife their husbands after a few drinks. Men are entitled to defend themselves even if their attackers smell like soap.

[–]G-man88 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"She couldn't do that, she just smells too pretty"....

[–]johnchapel58 points 9 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

Thats because the country is waking up to the fact that women are the majority of aggressors in domestic abuse situations.

[–]lost--girl 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm not saying I don't believe you, but source? I know domestic violence like this is severely underreported, but how would you reach the conclusion that women are the majority of abusers?

[–]johnchapel 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

To be fair it's only recently being posited, however the national statistic for police calls on domestic violence is now half men and half women, and the theory is accounting for the fact that when a woman hits a man, some astounding number like 80 percent goes unreported despite the fact that it IS domestic violence

[–]lost--girl 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dang 0__0 That's crazy. Thanks!

[–]Powdershuttle 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Concur. Have dated crazy women. Have been hit. Never called the cops. So there are 3 unreported right there.

[–]FlyTrap50 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Early on in my law enforcement career I responded to a domestic violence call. A woman opened the door to the home and her face was covered in blood. She looks like she got tuned up good.

I ask her what happened and she is quiet. Language barrier?

I have her sit down just outside the front door, and my partner goes in to make contact with the male while I watch the female.

My partner comes back out and brings the male out. His nose is literally hanging off his face and he is COVERED in blood.

Apparently, they were having sex and the dude did something she didn't like. So she decided so bite his nose off. She was on the bottom, so she got a ton of blood all over her face.

She went to jail for mayhem and DV. To this day the only mayhem I ever arrested anyone for. Large bail amount...LARGE.

A good lesson was learned that day.

[–]FlameSpartan 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Would it be out of line to ask how much her bail was?

[–]FlyTrap50 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly, I don't remember. It was years ago. But it is written on the booking paperwork I get back from the jail that goes in my report.

I remember it was the biggest amount I have ever seen next to no bail. Maybe $500,000?

[–]lost--girl 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good.

[–]Powdershuttle 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Girl I work with bit her boyfriend. So bad it bled. She was arrested. She was shocked and thought the cops over reacted. I asked why did you bite him? Conversation as follows ,

He was holding me down.

Why was he holding you down?

Because I was trying to punch him.

Why were you trying to punch him ?

She looked down ( trying to get me to succumb to the crocodile tears)

Because he was pushing me.

Why was he pushing you.

Because I stepped on his brand new x box one.

Ok, was that an accident?

No.

Then why did you do that to his expensive stuff?

Because he was supposed to use thAt money for our trip to Vegas next week. Instead he bought the Xbox.

Ok. Was it his money, or both of your money?

His money.

Ok, and you think that's the way to handle an adult situation?

Well no , and it wasn't even the same money. He should have just told me he booked everything and that he had extra money. Then I would not have even been pissed.

Ok, don't you think that would have come out in an adult conversation? The one you never had?

She rolled her eyes and walked away. Like I am the asshole.....
