"Always stand to shake someone's hand"

I absolutely hate it when someone shakes your hand while sitting down. They'll even lay back into the couch/chair and try to extend their hand from that position. The half-assed effort at being respectful makes it even more disrespectful.

A few of my male friends shared it. Agreed with most of them except "compliment her shoes" (wtf? that's a "top 45" tip?) and that respect should be given to everyone by default (should be earned).

Might be that people are running on different senses of the word respect. I'd argue that it's not a bad practise to grant everyone a certain baseline of respect that they can then increase or decrease. What I'm referring to might not be what respect means to you, though. Sometimes we can get caught up in language :P

Being polite is not the same as respect imo. I'm polite to strangers, but I don't respect them unless they have earned it.

I agree. The respect one was the one I really had an issue with. I'll be civil with everybody, but it doesn't mean I respect them. They need to earn my respect.

I think of it in the terms of when my mother used to tell me as a child to "be respectful" to everyone. Essentially treat everyone well if you don't know them.
