What about all the female leads we see in children's movies? Like Brave or that movie with Repunzel? I think that new movie about ice has a female lead. I feel like all I see are movies centered around strong female leads. And with the Hunger Games trilogy and that new Divergent movie coming out, there's female leads for young adult females to watch. I just don't see lack of female leads being an issue.

The problem I do think we'll end up seeing is when a movie that comes out with a strong male lead that appeals to young males, it will be dubbed as "sexist" and motivation to "perpetuate gender prejudice", further demonizing boys for looking up at strong males.

IMO we're already way overboard. It's difficult to find recent movies or books with strong males. Where are the Clint Eastwoods, Steve McQueens and Sean Connerys? Let's not mistake jump around action acrobats and softy boy toys (eg DiCaprio) for strong males.

Rarely can you have a strong male lead without some annoying female sidekick. If it doesn't happen at first it will definitely start in the sequel.

I just went through the IMDB top 50 and there was only one movie with a female lead. #39 Spirited Away, with doesn't even feature a real women and isn't from Hollywood. All good movies live from the male actors . Female characters are either in there for their looks or to make the male character do stupid (beta) stuff.

There's definitely a shortage of female characters. While lead roles are slightly more balanced they are still not even close to equal. The papers aren't focused on lead roles however. They talk about all the characters in the film. If you had a film that had a female lead but every other character was male, it would still be pretty unrealistic. Also, listing four movies you saw with a female lead over four years isn't exactly a stellar argument.

I think the shortage of female characters leads to a "special snowflake" mentality that is anything but good for society. "Oh you're a woman? No, you don't have to do anything to make your life better because just being you is special enough."

There are a lot of things leading to the "special snowflake" mentality in women and I don't think the ratios of male and female roles in movies is the main contributing factor. I should have expressed that in my earlier comment. Take away movies, and much of pop culture is centered around women, strong women expressing their own opinions. Also, it seems a bit far-fetched to make the assertion that the 17% of female characters that you see in films (G, PG, PG-13) is directly proportional (1:1) to having a number around 17% in authoritative positions in various career paths. I just don't see anyone realistically making career decisions based on a Disney movie they saw when they were 7.

As for the five movies I listed, I was recalling them from memory.

Yeah, no problem. I'm sure that movies aren't the only thing contributing to screwed up mentalities. There's television, commercials, all kinds of advertisement, and all kinds of other things that contribute. I think we should get rid of as many of these factors as we can. If women are taught that we all have to contribute to society, we'd all be much better off.

I try not to debate shit too much unless it affects me personally. My two favorite film genres are gangster/crime movies and old-school Kung Fu cinema. If they forcing unrealistic female roles into these movies that would ruin it for me.

I completely agree. They can put more women on film if they want, at the end we will watch what we want. For instance, Kill Bill has a bunch of strong women, with katanas, on it, and in my opinion is a good movie.

This might actually be a good thing. Not the crazy shit about women as leaders. That would be terrible. Seeing more women in movies might help remove the scarcity mentality that helps lead to beta behavior. Realize that women are everywhere and that none of them are inherently special.

Meh, if her stats are correct I don't see a problem with giving half the acting roles to women. It's not like we're talking about shoe-horning women into jobs where they don't perform as well as men and lowering the overall quality of the output.
