There's currently a post on the front page of TRP talking about giving up porn that got my attention. As you can imagine, the comments range from everything to "don't just give up porn, go nofap!" to 'but I love porn!". One in particular got my attention. In a nutshell, he said "We always tell everyone to give up porn, but for some new guys here, that's just too much at once. Go lift, talk to girls, give up porn, read the sidebar, and fix your career. That's a shitton at once."
I would have to agree. It is definitely a lot for a new guy to take in at once. Something that I haven't seen talked about much here (or anywhere for that much) is how to go about getting better. I don't mean how to lift, how to interact, or how to read. I mean how to master the art of progress. How to get better in the best way and how to always keep moving forward.
Many of you know the way progress works. You start off slow, get faster (noob gains) and then your progress slows. On a more in depth level, you peak, drop a bit, plateau, then peak again (this time higher last time) on and on and on. However, this only really applies if you're actively working at getting better.
So, how to do that? I'm going to talk about what's worked for me and why I believe it will work for most people. As an example: porn. There have been a few times in my life where I've tried to give it up and have been unsuccessful. Why? I also went nofap. I tried to give up masturbation as a whole. Instead, I should have focused on steady progression: drop porn first, then continue to nofap if need be. I finally did that this past month and have been very easily avoiding porn and getting more poon that ever. Focusing on doing one thing at a time is a very effective strategy for progress. Don't do it all at once or you'll get overwhelmed.
For instance, if you decide you want to bench 315 lbs, you don't just slap 3 plates on the bar and get under it hoping it works out. You start off with whatever weight you can naturally bench, and work on steady progression from there. Find a good program that works for you (I recommend 5x5 or 531) and just do it.
After a few months in the gym, maybe your numbers aren't where you want them to be yet, but you're falling into a routine and you no longer have to force yourself to go to the gym. Good, take on a new challenge. Drop porn. Check it out, now you masturbate less. Once that's under control, use your newfound free time to read a bit each day. Look at that, now you've read the sidebar and understand interactions with people more. Awesome, put that to use and go out on a Friday. Let's say it works out and you land yourself a plate. Not super hot, maybe a 6, but it's something. Good enough for you to learn how to fuck good. She gets your confidence up, so you go out and land a 7. Boom, you're moving up.
Sure, maybe the example is a bit far fetched, but the point is this: Don't take on a ton of challenges all at once if it's too much for you to handle. It is much better to do a little bit each day than it is to do a lot one day and nothing the next.
