The problem with the whole "be yourself" slogan is that people use it to rationalize that someone will come along and love them for who they are no matter what they do. Of course you should own up to your shit and be proud of who you are, that's called confidence. But there will always be a way to make yourself better, so strive to be that person instead of yourself.

Just be yourself implies that you are static, unchanging and have no influence on who you want/could be.

The number one rule of the universe is that everything is constantly changing, humans are the most adaptable species on the planet. To turn around and say "be yourself" is just ridiculous.

Do they think the great explorers of history sat around going, you know trying to change myself into an explorer is silly I'm just going to be myself.

My dad pulled me aside and told me, "you threw away a half full bottle, I can go pull it out of the trash and prove it, I don't care about the coke, just don't lie. Say yes, I threw it away, so what?" it was in Arabic so its hard to translate the rest, but essentially he was telling me, don't shy away or lie about what you did, own up to it. You threw away half a coke, who cares?

I think OP is talking about taking responsibility for one's actions, and at the same time maintaining frame ("say yes, I threw it away, so what?), which he is wording as "be yourself."

That's an awesome message from the dad. Some might have chimed in on the issue of wasting, but instead he focused on the real issue from the male point of view: responsibility and maintaining frame.

This is interesting, cos I've been thinking for some time now that maybe the "be yourself" cultural conditioning might actually just be a misunderstood way of saying "own your frame"

Misunderstood or not, it has negative effects for everyone who lives by it. Successful people who don't understand how they achieved success tell this to unsuccessful people thinking it might work for them, but it doesn't. People who use this do it for mainly two purposes:

  1. Rationalizing their bad behaviour so they can get fat and lazy

  2. Giving feel-good advice to people instead of telling them to stop being a fat lazy fuck and hit the gym

Sure, if you meet an intelligent successful person you can tell them to just "be yourself", but these are not the kinds of people who needs this advice. Owning your frame and standing up for yourself is only part of becoming the person you should be.

"Be yourself" tells people that they are not the problem, but every single person they have run into in their lives up until that point are. It's rationalizing at it's fucking worst, making people believe they can just keep being low value and miserable and something great will come along.

The reason that "be yourself" can be both the road to a wasted life of mediocrity and the road to personal power is simple: "yourself" is undefined. We do not have a single measurable self, and even one person will use such language to refer to a multitude of different attitudes, identities , processes and states - without even being aware of it.

You are free to be whatever set of feelings, thoughts and behaviours you can cultivate, within the limits of your neurology and physiology. If you are healthy and non-elderly those limits are not at all restrictive: rather, they are a guide.

My slogan is "Be the best self you can be"

[–]c00kme0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Having trouble with lying helps sometimes with that; I just feel odd saying "oh I like X or Y" when I don't.

However I have learned that lying by omission is very usefull.

So if someone says tells me I'm immature because I play video games too much, I tell them to go fuck themselves in a nice way

Manchild warning.

Yes I also run my own small business and lift 4 times a week and am a competitive powerlifter

Geez, what a utter manchild.
