A lot of the time these men meant a lot to them. Think about it. She thought that was it. She got to know him inside and out. Sexually as well. But also emotionally, his habits, everything. You guys have been married 28 years. That's something to be proud of. No marriage would last that long if it didn't have some pretty good stuff going for it.

It is possible that your wife cried over the death of her ex not only and/or not principally because he meant so much to her but because the death of someone in your own age group makes you feel limits to your own mortality.

She may be mourning him or she may be mourning her own youth. Don't assume the worst but be aware of all the possibilities of what her feelings of being upset might mean. A marriage of 28 years must have a lot of good that is worth hanging on to.
