“Not every little girl gets to do what they want. The world could not support that many ballerinas.”

Same goes for guys too, which those feminists never seem to realize. Many guys want to be the billionaire tech start-up, only a miniscule fragment actually get what they want. PSA: statistically speaking, that's not you. Which is why the whole grumbling about "corporate drones" come about.

Multiple different issues in your post.

" we are dead broke" Are you living together? Sharing a lot of expenses? You might be surprised that you are not as broke as she and her children are. "She has no car, and has 2 kids." Same father? Child support? "She loves me unconditionally" Bullshit. Humans are not capable of unconditional love. She should love her children more than you.

" 2 jobs (retail...)" Are they at least related to fashion, and does she get any sort of commission and contacts within that industry? "I just cant stand looking towards a life of poverty." Good, you should not, you have done nothing to deserve poverty. You have not (to our knowledge) had kids you could not support, and you have chosen a career where you can make decent money.

"Leave her?" Yeah, I'd leave in your position. "She will never be able to provide for her 2 children trying to sew clothes when most businesses just hire slaves in china for this purpose." The material cost is largely irrelevant. It's more a matter of convincing people to spend a shitload of money on a brand or style for prestige.

"Am I wrong?"

Your fucking life man, it's not TRP's job to tell you the life you should want to live. But yes, providing for a single mother who has not only fucked up her life, but actively plans on wasting more time, as well as providing for another man's children, sounds textbook beta to the point that this is probably a troll post.

She will always love her children over you. She will resent you for making money while her career waffles around, and on the microscopic chance she makes it, she will resent you and rationalize that you never supported her. She will meet men who make way more money than you, who have a much better fashion, and resent the living fuck out of you for not being them (she may or may not cheat).

She will cheat. Come on. Broke single mother with clothier pipe dreams? Any jackass postulates an in to the fashion industry and it's a done deal.

Honestly...there is no reason to go to school for fashion. Fashion is one of those areas where you can literally "thug life" it and become successful while having all the odds stacked against you.

You don't need to go to school for it. Ralph Lauren started making his own ties. If your girlfriend is serious about it...she should just start making her own shit and sell it on Etsy or any of those other websites.

No need to blow money and take on debt to study "fashion" when (if you're truly talented) you can start TODAY.

I was thinking about going into that while writing my response. With fashion/the arts/graphic design it's all a mixture of portfolio, contacts, exposure and experience (from my understanding). School can certainly help a tiny bit in all these areas, and it might provide a structure of doing these things that works better for some people, but I doubt it could justify its price vs doing the exact same thing on your own time.

[–]UnpluggedMaestro0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. One should go to college only for one reason: when what you need can only be gained through college and no other paths. An example is aeronautical engineering, or material science/nanotech engineering. You're not gonna be able to get a systematic, competent education anywhere else. Btw I'm referring to "school" in general, so colleges and technical institutes are included in this generalization. Art? I think you can pretty much learn that shit on your own without going into debt.

The big issue here is not her career choice, but why you are dating a single mom with two kids. You are about to be the beta-bucks provider buddy.

How old is everyone involved?

I have to assume the kids aren't yours at this point. She might be awesome, but what I am reading is that she crushed her own dreams by having kids too early, and now she's looking for a world outside of her own existence to cling to because her life isn't quite what she thought it would be.

She doesn't have to give up her 'dreams', but quitting everything to go to school and leave you with all the financial responsibilities (especially considering you've only been dating for a year) is just not cool. Perhaps encourage her to do some short online courses, sell things on Etsy, or maybe local markets? Just to get an idea of what her actual talent is like. The problem with design is that everyone who thinks they have an arty streak thinks they can do it, and don't realise there is a lot more involved than just sketching pictures of pretty things.

Or get her to take some business classes as well so she can see the scope of what's she's up against.

Also FYI- While they do have to sew up their assignment pieces, they aren't producing this stuff en masse to sell. Often the instructors will have contacts with companies to get designs from who they see in the courses that have potential. If she's not winning any awards, then it's unlikely she's any good. That said, sewing up the assignment pieces and participating in group projects takes up a LOT of time.

There is also a possibility she's banking on what you will make in the future as an electrician.

Find her stats or articles about how much of a scam fashion school or whatever its called is. Encourage her to seek more management type positions. From what I understand there are jobs where people work in acquiring clothing for major retailers; something like researching brands and choosing clothes for a store. She won't be making clothes herself but it will be better than just being a salesperson.

Do research with her. And if she still wants to go to fashion school and if you still want to stick with her, then do not foot the bills and make it clear you are not going to help her pay for it. And don't pay any more to supporting her kids than you already do.

I bet if she thinks you will leave her if she goes off to fashion school, she will totally drop any interest in it.
