Just thought I'd share a funny NYE story. Last night I went to a NYE party thrown by an old high school friend's gf. Among the people there was a buddy of mine and his ex girlfriend.
Well, I have a jaded view on other people (close to full blown misanthropy), but I genuinely try to look out for friends, their feelings, their well being, and all that.
Long story short, my friend's ex-gf was there and IMO anytime a woman is in the presence of both an ex and alcohol it's a recipe for disaster. Well, my buddy's ex got so fucked up that she had to take a little "time out" in a bedroom upstairs. I was worried that she would drive home all fucked up so I went upstairs with the intent to tell her not to drive home and offer her free cab fare so she wouldn't drive. A drunk "nap" won't do shit in terms of blood alcohol level and flexible probable cause for a cop when driving late on NYE.
I've always been the type of person who has looked out for myself in life. Every job, woman, and accomplishment has come on behalf of my own efforts up to this point (25 years old) so it comes with the territory. When you own your own miles and earn your own stripes you realize that all the things you earn can be stripped with one mistake.
A DUI would end my life. Period. It would end my buddy's ex's life too so that's why I told her not to drive home. I take women at face value and accept that they tend to make stupid decisions. I'd feel guilty if a drunk and potentially emotional chick got behind the wheel and fucked up her life and someone else's life if there was a collision (any time an ex is around it gets emo for women).
Well, in the spirit of New Years I also told her some "feel good" cheer bullshit (you are such a cool chick, I've missed you, yada yada) along with my advice to not drive home and to take my offer for cab fare if she needed it. Basically the feel good cheer was said in hopes that it would "sell" her on not driving.
Of course, alcohol complicates things so when the cab was on its way I went back into the room to be like "hey the cab is coming if you want to come." Well, I walked in on my buddy's gf in bed who then screamed upon my entry.
I know I should have knocked, but it was the ultimate whatthefuck.net
Mind you, I was taking the cab with another friend back to my house so this wasn't an "invitation" to stay the night with me. If she came she was going to get dropped off at her place first and we would cop the fare because noblesse oblige. Well, after making my buddy's gf scream he gave me a 1 on 1 over how I "creeped out" the chick I offered the cab ride to which also pissed off her ex-bf. Maybe they were talking again? Who knows. Not my business.
Well, I guess she thought I was trying to date rape her or something when I came to check up on her? So...when my buddy's gf screamed when I walked in on her in bed she must have been thinking "Oh shit Captain Date Rape is coming after me now!!"
Given that, the 1 on 1 my buddy had to give me was tough. I basically choked up delivering the message that I've been trying to get away from that circle of friends. They are all pretty much in long term relationships so I really don't expect to see them unless they need something...though I make an effort to hang with them when invited to not seem like a dick. I was hoping to just "fizzle out" after NYE and deliver the message that way.
Lesson: Dealing with women you are not attracted to is like dealing with women in Corporate America. I'm nervous to get in an elevator alone with a woman or get stuck in the printing room with another woman at the office. You never know how shit can get twisted.
TL;DR:
Buddy's ex got drunk on NYE. I didn't want her to drive home. Told her not to drive home, offered cab fare, said nice blue pill things in the spirit of New Years. Get accused of being a creep and probably making an attempt to date rape a woman I am not attracted to who honestly has a stupid haircut that makes her look like a dyke.
