I am tired of seeing celebrations for celebrations sake in our society. Recognizing people or groups based on nothing more than they exist rather than actual accomplishments. I was on campus today, and ran across a poster reminding everyone that Engineering Week starts March 3rd, and it just pissed me off. Recognizing people based on no more than which major they picked is a ridiculous use of time and energy. I am not an engineer, I would hate it and probably be a pretty terrible one. But if I had selected that as my major, I now have a week to celebrate it. This kind of thing pisses me off because it shows the blue pill side of the world is strong, that you can get recognition for absolutely nothing, and that just breeds mediocrity. You no longer have to work hard for recognition,it falls into your lap. It's a way to lie to yourself, that you are important without doing anything.
