As a programmer, I often catch myself in a mindset of "ok, what do I want to do?" and instead of just answering it, I will take it an additional step and try to formulate an answer that will yield the most positive results; but then I have to stop myself and realize that this second step is giving undue consideration to other people that matter less.

So just answer the first question.

What do you want to do? Do you care about engineering? Are you passionate about it? If you have an opportunity to become educated and obtain a degree in something that you have a great deal of interest in, why the fuck wouldn't you?

You first. Everybody else is a distant second.

Mechanical engineering graduate here.

Go to every single class. You can't learn this shit at home.
If you have a class study room, do your homework there. You can't learn this shit alone.
Complete all your homework assignments and take your questions to the profs. They will appreciate it an remember who you are, so in addition to getting homework help they'll probably boost your grades because they like you.
Hit the gym at least 3 times a week, especially if it's free.
Spend every night you can working on game. Just go to a bar and talk to girls. Don't do this if you have class in the morning.
Put a lid on the video games, seriously.
Look for a job in your last year before you graduate. If you don't find a job within a year of graduation you're fucked.
Don't waste your time on a girlfriend - have one if you want, but make sure your schooling is #1.

The above is what I more or less did in my last year of school after going through the crippling breakup that made me cough up the Blue Pill. Had I done this all 5 years I would have had a much better time with school - in 4th year my average went from 60% to 80% from adopting good habits.

You have the advantage of getting this advice now, so you damn well better put it to good use.

I'm an engineer too.

Train smart. Time during college is most precious. You shouldn't spend too much time in the gym and you shouldn't be constantly tired. Look into Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty system.
Great analysis on employer and the boss. I suppose you already know just being able to make this analysis puts you ahead of your peers. Mechanical engineering is a very versatile profession, if you are good at your craft AND have decent soft skills you can be that boss. (Gervais/McLeod, 48 Laws, etc etc)
Learn programming. X who can write code > X > code monkey. Software is eating the world and it's not going to change in the future. I'm not saying become a programmer though! Just be capable of writing software. And learn statistics well. Very versatile skills.
Learn to be good at your personal finances. This is a skill you need BEFORE you get your money right. (Check out "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" for starters.)

Don't switch your major. Engineers make more money up front and the market for business and finance is heavily saturated with few ways to objectively set yourself apart from everyone else. If you want to be rich later, it's actually incredibly simple. Save 50% of what you make, invest it using the Boglehead's investment philosophy and by the time you are 30 you'll be rich. When you hit 40, you can retire. For every $200k/year business owner there are 10 others that tried it and failed miserably.

It's easy to get a job as an engineer. You don't have to make your job an important part of your persona. It can just be a thing you do between 9 and 5 that pays the bills. I'd avoid other engineers like the plague - you can hang out all day with the business majors or take a minor in business to pick up chicks. Hell you can just show up to the big classes and blend in without being enrolled.

Don't switch to business, unless you end up just hating your major. ME is a far more difficult degree to complete, gives you a more specialized and highly demanded skill set, and speaks much louder to potential employers. Where I'm from at least, business is seen as the major for people who couldn't handle an engineering degree.

Im in an EE grad program. Girls will always be impressed with whatever you do as long as you are interested and enthused about it. That energy is contagious.

As for a career, do what you enjoy the most regardless of the income level. Stop focusing on salaries. The wife of your hypothetical beta bucks engineer will cheat on him with the unemployed musician just as quickly as the executive.

Now is not even the time to be thinking about LTRs. Focus on your education, career, hobbies, social skills and network, and increasing your SMV above the betas and omegas in your major.

Do what YOU want to do. Toss out the life script you've been handed, and write your own.

I'm a computer engineer and I'm actually paying my way through college through a combination of startups and work. One of the best ways I can impress is through my clothes. I'm constantly networking to try and find connections (and hopefully something good out of college) so I focus more on the business end of engineering rather than the programming itself.

This matters because it forces me to change my wardrobe. I have to dress as if I could be meeting with someone else at any moment. On some days, I'll dress like a typical software engineer with collarshirt and jeans. Other days I'll dress in a hoodie. But every time I go out, I am always conscious about how I will present myself to others. Its one of those habits you pick up in business and it does you a world of good.

So what should you do? Get involved with something tangentially related to your major, even if it wont help you directly or immediately. Maybe 1 or 2 elements from that activity will benefit you. In my case, it has helped me land 2 internships, money, and a sense of fashion. I now go to every party with girls thinking I'm some young business major but they dont even know I'm a huge nerd.

Go for a masters degree. There's basically no reason not to. If you are more passionate about a research topic, you are more alpha. Women see through the bullshit of "business development" and other managerial/non-technical skills that often propell MEs to long-term mediocrity in life.

Study. Ignore the girls. Contrary to popular belief, college isn't a time to have sex and party.

When you have an education, a job and a house then you are ready to begin breeding.

Try to remember your house is a nest. It is not really yours at all, but it belongs to your chosen mate, the kids and the society in general.

Remember that wise men advocate celibacy. In the event celibacy isn't possible, understand you are rushing in where angels fear to tread. The world doesn't need any more children.

Should you decide you need women and children, then you must realize you are surrendering to the flesh, and you will suffer.

There is no world known to man where people freely bed one another without serious biological consequences.

And there is nothing new under the sun.
