As usual, it's only a problem when it happens to her. The cause-du-jour is technology.

Vague statements like "Technology is changing the way we socialize" are missing the point.

The game is the same. Social media and cellphones are just an added tool, and they're shifting the power in men's favour. Here's why:

The reason dating used to be more formal is that you had fewer opportunities to make contact with a specific person. You had to call someone on the phone and arrange to meet them, so each exchange felt more significant.

But nowadays, you can reach anyone, anywhere at anytime. You can be in perpetual contact with partners and never be in the same room as them for months at a time.

Thing is, women are now getting a taste of what it's like to be option #27 in a list of 39.

See, women were still being hit on constantly even in the pre-social media days. Their perception of option availability was still much higher than men's.

Now that social media has allowed us all to reach more people, both sexes have seen their numbers of perceived options increase, but the number of perceived options that men have has gone up higher than it has for women relative to what they were pre-social media.

In other words, men are now acting as "flaky" as women because they feel like they have as many options as women do. And they're not wrong.

And so, the hamster turns its wheels to find a "problem".

At 29, I’m very happy with my life - it’s fun and fulfilling and I rarely feel lonely.

The rest of the article, especially its conclusion, suggests otherwise.

[–]TRP Vanguardlegendofpasta8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bahahaha qualifying statements like that always flag the opposite sentiment's presence.

"I'm happy with my decision to choose a career over a family life! Kids would just get in the way of my dreams" - uttered by the loneliest gal I know.

[–]TRP VanguardHumanSockPuppet3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the mere existence of the article suggests otherwise.

She wouldn't bother writing on the subject if things were "status quo, female-advantage" as before.

[–]Bobsutan3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

One of the comments nailed it too. "Wait until you're 35 and the phone stops ringing. It will happen." Point being, if she thinks it's bad now, just wait until she really hits the wall. Women need to wise up and learn to leverage their youth and beauty/fertility to land a man instead of riding the carousel, focusing on a career, and then think they can pencil in a man and a family when they're established in their mid 30s the way men are able to. Sorry ladies, life doesn't work that way.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Judging by this chicks profile pic she already is post-wall... at least I wouldn't[edit] fuck her, not with my dick or someone else's...

better title for the article:

The difficulties of 21st-century dating : entitled feminist landwhales have cratered the nations average SMV

[–]Bobsutan1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh, that was actually her? In that case yeah, I definitely agree.

[–]TRP Vanguardss_camaro0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Women need to wise up and learn to leverage their youth and beauty/fertility to land a man...

So they can cash in your chips in their mid-30s, take the kids, find some strange and be their normally, divinely, miserable selves.

[–]Bobsutan-2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

who said anything about having kids? and if you screen probably and remove the incentives for frivolous divorce, the odds of things blowing up in your face are much much much lower

[–]TRP Vanguardss_camaro2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The chances of a marriage lasting -- with screening or not -- is less than 50%. Makes about as much sense as playing Russian roulette with 3 bullets in the cylinder.

[–]TRP VanguardVZPurp1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That's some serious wishful thinking.

[–]Bobsutan-1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Maybe. Maybe not. Keep in mind that I don't advocate guys even thinknig about marrying until their 30s. If they shack up with women about the same age then those women won't have the number of options available to them. Heartiste had a good article on that subject, women being as faithful their options. Combine this factor with the stuff Athol Kay talks about in Married Man Sex Life, and filter that through the stuff over at The Rational Male, and I really do think you can knock down the odds of your marriage going boom by screening, using the SMP age-related dynamics, and so on.

Most divorces are to those who marry young, and I suspect to men who "go beta". Fix those two issues and the divorce rates plummet.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

These are good points. IF you do decide that having children is a fundamental goal for you time on this planet, then the best you can do is mitigate the odds of divorce and complete sexual abandon. These are still high risks though regardless. Men these days shouldn't fool themselves into thinking that they can have it all. They can possibly have most of what they want, but if they get married, they are taking some very measurable risks. Even a woman with less options in her 30s, may still go eat pray love on you in her 40s. There's a lot of support out there for her and even if she says she'll never do that, she can't predict how susceptible to her emotions she may become in the future.

I personally would recommend that men wait until 30s like you, but then look for a woman in her early 20s.

[–]Bobsutan0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm 36, my current girlfriend is 23 and didn't ride the carousel. If we ever split up, she'll be my "alpha widow", ya know what I mean? There really is a lot of value in dating women with low/no partner counts. Once you fuck them good and treat them good, BAM! pair bonded like a puppy. As long as you don't take advantage of it it's the best kind of relationship out there IMO.

[–]ProductivityMonster1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

just make sure you realize that at one point she may blame you for not getting the chance to ride the carousel (even if she doesn't feel that way now). I would wait till they're a little bit older and had some time to experiment.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What immediately struck me was how she made it seem like it she had to reveal her entire world online. Like it wasn't a choice. Like she had to follow the herd of women with their phones and other validation streams.

[–]Sola_Rex4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Money quote was here:

At this point, I’d been sleeping with this man for…. it was clear that our ‘relationship’ was no such thing, that he wasn’t willing to give me what I wanted and deserved.

and deserved

Blame it on new technology? The more things change, the more they stay the same. Her picture and second chin put her at a fairly low spot in the sexual marketplace (perhaps a 4, depending on how charitable one wants to be), but she is still holding out hope that some 'prince' is going to notice her (that 'chemistry') and it's all going to work. Has modern technology changed how the female self-deception works? Not in quality, but because of the greater ambiguity, it allows them to fool themselves more easily.

What does that mean to us? It means: Just play the game. Leave it ambiguous where possible, and only become clear when absolutely necessary. This gives women space to spin their own romantic dramas, complete with the full range of emotion from infatuation to dread.

[–]sweisman1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If she has a problem with being Facebook friends with former lovers, why doesn't she just defriend them, instead of complaining?! Typical hamster at work.

Look at her feminist dykey hair cut... Yeah she's gonna need a cat or something
