How do you study (work) for 80+ hours a week?

To answer though, it just takes time, discipline, and a passion for what you do. Nobody can force themselves to work 80+ hours a week for something they don't love, or see a tangible good outcome from working 80+ hours per week. You probably don't need to, or should be, studying 80 hours a week. However, if you have a job, gym, study etc then they should all total up to something around the 80 hour mark.

So: Learn your habits and rhythm for studying, and improve it. Try studying 3 hours without a break, try 7 hours of being productive etc, just keep pushing it further and further and eventually you won't notice when 4 or 5 hours go by and you've been productive.

Also I'd note, I don't think anyone is productive for 8 hours straight, day in day out. It just doesn't happen. Part of the process comes in waves, and you have to acknowledge this and still do productive things and switch off when you know you aren't going to be productive, like go to the gym, cook your food you need for the week, clean your room etc etc

You don't, cause it'll burn you out.

It's strictly for the hungriest and for those with great purpose.

I have been grinding out boring shit in 12h shifts and barely felt alive after a while.

What you have to remember is although the body can take a great deal of abuse, we used to be hunter gatherers most of our evolution that didn't have 80h office job workloads.

I'd rather move to a cheap place / your parents basement / cabin innawoods and do whatever needs to be done slowly than losing my physical and mental health for a couple short term gains.

Bear something in mind- almost ALL of the people who boast about their work in hourly terms are exaggerating. Especially women, but also men. The hardest working guys I've seen don't keep count; they're always at it. The ones who produce totals like "I work 90 hours a week"; I've seen them and they don't. They simply count all the hours they're "at the office"- they include their commute times into it, they include the times they're at lunch, etc. You get the picture. It becomes a 'bragging rights' between people and people almost always add 50%.

It's roughly the same thing when people go "I never slept for that week" or "I only sleep 3 hours a night". It's usually - an empty boast.

I work long hours but I'm not get into this pissing contest- because from firsthand experience, very few are telling the truth. I would say on average, when I've worked with someone saying they're putting in 80 hours, they're actually putting in something like 45-50.

What's your major? Are you shooting for the President's Honor Roll or something? Do you want to graduate with a perfect 4.0? Is this your goal? Goals are great. If 80-hours a week will help you do these things so be it. Otherwise pray and work and build work relationships and grow more spiritually. God will take you much further than any GPA. Get work experience; save ca$h; the less you have to borrow to pay for school the better.

I studied like 5 hours a week in college. Also didn't go to classes when they didn't take participation and it was test based. My best friend was in all same classes (finance major) and if it was one that we needed notes in we'd just switch off.

Avoid participation based classes like the fucking plague.

Otherwise anything that's more of a hard subject you can learn a couple weeks worth of classes by studying the damn book for a few hours.

I swear some people just study to feel like they are accomplishing something.

Your end goal is getting a good grade and getting out of there with a piece of paper. Participating, having professors like you, studying for the sake of studying....I just don't get it.

80 hour work weeks are usually a myth along with snipe hunts and cow tipping. Have you ever actually met someone that said they did this? And if they did, did you ever find any inconsistencies in their stories? Don't buy into the tough guy bullshit. It's usually a form of narcissism and one-up-manship to make themselves feel superior to you.

I've been in two start up companies and am currently earning a PhD in a STEM field. It's not real. The very few that claim to do it are taking something (high levels of adderall or cocaine) and burning the candle at both ends, like Wall St. types. And the candle that burns twice as bright lasts half as long. When they have Parkinson's at 50 from the neuro-toxicity build up, they'll wish they hadn't. Which, by the way, we'll be seeing quite a bit of in 10-20 years from the methamphetamine epidemic and the abuse of ADD meds by younger adults (20-40) in the 90s.

Work smart not hard.

Don't worry about it because they're not working 80 hours a week. Just think about it rationally - you would get burned out easily. Maybe for one week. But you really think you could live on a finals type schedule for life? Plus, other areas of life would suffer too which would affect your quality of work. Life's balance.

The short answer is that it comes down to time management. As you get older, you're ability to manage things get better, but you also will learn to sacrifice certain things. Caffeine is your friend, and you should also learn to take frequent breaks so that your brain retains the ability to focus. Also, as you get older, your need for sleep decreases. Right now - I'm pretty good at 5 or 6, when previously, I wouldve needed 8 to fully function.

Plus working long hours isnt as hard as it sounds to be honest. Most people in the private sector work around 50-60 hours normally, so an extra 20 isnt a great leap. I find the tricky part to be finding time to eat but also finding time to do social things on the weekdays. If you can convince your employer to let you take work home at night or to come in on the weekends, then its even easier
