our scent is derived from bacteria that lives on us.
the bacteria that lives on us is determined by our immune system. Our immune system is given to us by our biological parents.

We can be attractive to opposites scents because they are different from our own, ie I think my sister stinks, and I think exotic women smell nice because biologically babies that were created from incest do not fare well in life. Babies born from distinct parents who give children opposing and different immune systems do much better.

Also in the spectrum is how a womans cycle, and specifically where she is in her cycle will effect her sense of smell and what she finds attractive. While ovulating, she will generally prefer a muskier manlier smell then when not ovulating. Again, it is biologically driven.

People generally pair up with opposite sex of their own level of attractiveness, ie, if you are a 6, you'll attract lots of 5's and a few 6's. You may pine for some 7's but will likely land with a 6.

People also tend to pair up with their own level of crazy. If you are needy and obsessive, expect to pair up with a woman who is needy and abusive.

Health is a factor, Olympic athletes do not date quadriplegics. People generally pair with people of their same health level.

Lastly couples tend to pair up oppositely from their masculine/feminine levels. Strong masculine attracts strong feminine traits. Masculine men do not attract masculine women and such.

Lay biologist here. There have been several studies that found that women are attracted to the smell of men. Some percentage of women have a certain structure called the VMO (vomeronasal organ). This structure is linked directly into the brain and limbic system (just as the olfactory bulb is, which is why certain smells seem to trigger powerful emotions and memories). The women were given shirts to smell and found that some men's sweaty shirts triggered feelings of attraction. I don't remember this stuff very well so someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe testosterone was not found to have an effect, instead it was based primarily on MHC's. MHCs are called major histocompatibility complexes and they are responsible for presenting peptides in the case of an infection. The human genome codes for 6-8 (depending on MHC type) of them and they are all expressed simultaneously. The more peptides you can present, the greater the chance that a successful immune response can be mounted against a pathogen. Thus women are pheromonally attracted to men with significantly different MHCs and it makes sense as any off spring that have diverse MHCs are more likely to survive an infection. This goes back to heterozygous advantage; in general it is best to be genetically diverse rather than genetically homozygous.

There's no point in having 'thoughts' on something like this. It's isn't a philosophical position. You are postulating something scientific, without having an understanding of the biology involved.
