I watched a news segment today about a lady who had been in prison. She missed 5 years of her children growing up and became close to a bunch of women in the prison. The segment was about her wanting the women to be rehabilitated in some way rather than being locked up. The 4 people on the news panel were all nodding in support of her and shared encouraging words. Congratulating her for doing something for what she found important.

It hit me. This issue is in no way a gendered thing. A prison is an old form of technology that gets rid of an issue easier than trying to fix the people in the situation. How can everyone just nod in agreement and overlook this fact? How can they use a tactic such as showing clips of her and her daughters? Clips of her daughters crying and explaining how much they missed each other?

Then I thought about the male to female ratio in prisons. In the year 2010 there were 1,499,573 men and 112,822 women. That makes 7% of inmates women.

I don't disagree that it is a problem but how can she openly pursue this problem for women while it isn't a gender specific issue and get pats on the back? A lot of people in prison do need help that they aren't getting but why is it ok for her to look out for the 7%? Why is it ok to place guilt onto viewers in order push her opinion of how important a mother is to her children and overlook the fact that she was imprisoned(I missed why she was tbh)?
