For me, the answer is generally, no, it is not ethical for a man to cheat. If you want the type of relationship where you get to fuck around on your wife or SO, that's fine, but own it. Either make it clear to her that you are going to be non-exclusive sexually, or end the relationship. If you tell someone you are going to be exclusive/faithful, then live up to your word.

The major exceptions to this general rule in my mind are:

(1) When a wife just totally shuts down sexually, her husband is justified in cheating. When a man pledges fidelity to his wife, then there is an implicit promise on her part of sexual access to her. That doesn't mean getting to fuck her all the time on command, but it does mean sexual access to her and sexual enthusiasm by her on a regular enough basis for him to be happy and satisfied. If the divorce laws were fair, I would say that a lack of sexual access and enthusiasm should just lead to a clean break divorce. But divorces frequently are not fair, and men frequently get divorce raped and lose meaningful access to their kids. It is fundamentally unfair to tell a man that his wife can put him in a position where he must give up his children and assets, or live a life without sex. That unfairness and bias in the law in favor of woman creates an ethical situation (in my mind) that justifies cheating. One caveat I would throw in is that cheating would only be justified if a man has worked to increase his SMV to about as high as he can and his wife is still unresponsive. Just like a woman implies sexual access by accepting a man's promise of fidelity, a man also makes an implicit promise that he will use his best efforts to keep his SMV as high as possible.

(2) I think a husband is justified in cheating if the wife is cheating on the husband. He's put himself in a bad financial situation by getting married, and divorcing the cheating wife may be a terrible financial option. Since the wife instigated the cheating, and the law has put the husband in an untenable position to get the wife out of his life, the husband is ethically justified to make the best of a bad situation and seek sexual comfort elsewhere.

Now, flip these two situations around (where the husband is frigid or where the husband is cheating on the wife first). I really don't think either of these justifies a wife cheating on her husband. The legal system is not set up to fuck the side over in a divorce like it is for her husband. Therefore, if her husband won't fuck her, or is cheating on her, a wife should file for divorce instead of cheating.

Yes. There is a difference.

In the history of the world, there are many, many cultures who would practice polygamy. The notion of marriage being one man and one woman may be a Christian thing and the Christian/European influence on the world.

Before Christianity came and fucked things up, polygamy was widespread. Marriage for a woman meant being married to a single man. Marriage for a man meant being married to as many women that you're rich enough to support.

Biologically speaking, this makes sense. A woman can hold about one pregnancy a year and that's pushing it. A man can sire another child every night. The reproductive power of a woman is extremely limited, the reproductive power of a man is infinite. Thus, a woman must be limited to a single man, otherwise she is promiscuous. A man can be with many women, it is simply perpetuating the species.

Not fair? Well, if fair = equal, than it's not fair. But that's life. Men and women are not equal by any means. We're not the same at all. The only area in which we are equal is in the sense that we're all human. Every other aspect is different and that's what makes it so awesome. It would be so boring if everyone was exactly the same....
