A week ago I decided to break it off with my girlfriend. Before breaking up with my girlfriend of 2.5 years I was very concerned about the prospect of it. From her behaviour my reasons for this were:

  • She constantly called me her favourite person, told me how much she loved me and how I am the best thing in her life. Like daily.
  • She displayed lots of needy and dependent behaviour on me and after being apart for 1 day she would come out with the 'I miss you' , 'I need to see you' lines.
  • She would get incredibly jealous/insecure if other women showed an interest in me.
  • I had a strong feeling she would beg and plead and make it incredibly hard for me to leave once I decide I wanted to break up (I was wrong).

Basically, I was under the impression that she was very dependent on me for her happiness.

Long story short, after I broke it off with her and explained all my reasons. She briefly pleaded with me to change my mind. And when I stood strong, reiterated my reasons for breaking up and that she was not meeting the basic standards I have set for being in a relationship.... she cut all contact, if I messaged her something about collecting her stuff and the logistics of the break up, she would reply with a very short response. It is almost as if she flipped a switch in her head and I am dead to her. Don't get me wrong, I am 100% fine with this because it makes moving on so much easier that she isn't trying to keep the flame going.

Now I ask you this question, if she was really dependent on me, if she really loved me with all her heart, if she really couldn't live without me, could she just flick the love switch just like that?

And this is a stereotypical 'good girl'. Low partner count, parents still married, upper middle class family, polite and courteous/non bitchy. AWALT.

They 'love' you for what you can bring to the relationship and add to their life. Once they realise you are done with them/will not add any value to their life, you may as well be dead to them.
