Do you know the author? I don't have an account to comment.

His reference (18) is broken. It should be some sort of statistics from the US department of health and human services on child abuse with regard to parent involvement. I'd be interested to see it.

The closest thing I can find on their site only breaks down into Men vs Women (45% vs 54%), and then 'parents' (80%). It doesn't break that down into 'mothers' vs 'fathers' which I'd like to see.

http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/resource/child-maltreatment-2011

Edit - it is in there, just not in the chapter I was expecting ("perpetrators"). Mothers are twice as likely as fathers. This trend was in 2009 as well as 2011. However 2001, mothers were at 3x. Difference in reporting? Due to single mother variations? Or are men getting worse? An interesting variation.

Your attention to detail is uncanny. Kudos.

Has anyone ever seen a commenter speaking in favour of feminism in a constructive manner without snark and "hints"?

Apparently, it's also difficult for you to post comments that are not content-free. Here, allow me to help:

Who is clueless? Name them. On reddit a nick will do.

Why are they clueless? Quote their mistaken/misleading/false/fallacious post or comment and point out the problem. If you disagree with a factual claim, provide better information, or at least point out that it's unsupported.

There are lots and lots of people who call themselves feminists who are exactly what we claim.

What gives you the idea that your definition is correct?

You don't run the movement. They do. Because they can scream way louder than you. You're just a useful idiot to them.

And then you, completely oblivious to the 'other' feminists, have the chuzpe to claim we are in the wrong because we oppose a horde of dangerous hypocrites that took the name 'feminist' a long time before you did?

Does anyone on this subreddit actually understand what feminism is? (Here's a hint: it's not a war against men)

I don't think you do. There's so many flavours of it, even I could fit the definition of a feminist in some definition. Too bad these harmless definitions, including yours, don't matter in real life.

So some numerous, unnamed "they" assert that feminism is an ideology of female supremacy while you assert that it

is simply an ideology, or set of related ideologies, that wish for women to have equal rights and be treated equally

Why is your assertion any better than theirs?

The linked article provided examples of feminists advocating for unfair treatment of men all the way to denying them the presumption of innocence. Are "legal experts" from Jessica Valenti's piece not true Scotsmen feminists?

In fact, some activists and legal experts in Sweden want to change the law there so that the burden of proof is on the accused; the alleged rapist would have to show that he got consent, instead of the victim having to prove that she didn't give it.

Look how she gendered those pronouns. Is she not a feminist? Are you going to be "deliberately obtuse"?

The deliberately obtuse will claim that Valenti is merely commenting on somebody else's position, with her vague attribution to “some activists and legal experts in Sweden”.

What experts? Valenti doesn't name them. She does directly quote a Swedish feminist, Johanna Palmström, but doesn't attribute the argument for presumptive guilt to Palmström. Wherever Valenti got this idea, she owns it now, and it's Valenti arguing in its favor in her Washington Post article.

For all that superiority you exude, your unsourced, vague comments addressing no particular argument don't compare favourably.

Incomming in 3... 2... 1...

That's it. If you have an issue with women wanting equal rights then you're a bad person.

Boom! Good old shame men into submission. Tactical debate analysis sequence ending...

Flunt, let me save you some time here. You want to debate us? That's fine.

But we have a higher standard of discourse here. Ad hominem attacks and using these won't get you anywhere, and likely banned.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not what your arguing, it's that your arguing the point through the age old technique of social shaming.

And I don't think we should have equal rights. Women should have more reproductive rights than men. It is their body and they are effected by pregnancy much more than men. I also think men should be the ones going to war if one occurs, because I don't think I can rely on a woman to have my back in a fire fight.

There are plenty of cases where rights should be equal though! Men should get an equal chance of equality in child custody. Men shouldn't have to bear all the risk in marriage, since they don't even benefit from it much. Women shouldn't be able to slap men with no-proof spousal abuse. False rape accusations should be prosecuted as aggressively as rape cases. Etc. etc.

There are places where our rights should be equal, but let's not pretend that all our rights should be.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You say women deserve equal rights that men have but women and men are not equal. That is what makes her a woman and him a man.

I think you should request a debate with the moderator and find out.

Does anyone on this subreddit actually understand what feminism is? (Here's a hint: it's not a war against men)

Did you read the actual article? Do you have a response to these specific, well thought out criticisms?
