I like this post. Your definition of "charm" is pretty strict but I get it. You're saying to spend your energy advancing in the male social hierarchy, and then let the women flock to you.

That's a very RP message, but I gotta say that changing times call for changing tactics. Class mobility in the western world is at an all-time low. The energy costs of moving up in the male hierarchy are more than most men can handle.

I suggest that the solution is to become more wiley and resourceful. In The Odyssey, they always describe Odysseus as "Wiley." That just means he's smart — he's always looking for ways to advance in the male social hierarchy, but he's creative about it. He doesn't take the well-trodden paths. He's wiley.

One way to be wiley these days is to start your own company instead of trying to advance in the social hierarchy of a pre-existing company. I don't mean to start another fucking restaurant in NYC or LA, I mean starting a totally new kind of business that does something new that no ones ever seen before. I highly recommend everyone read Peter Thiel's book "Zero to One," which goes into depth about this.

OP, your message about charm is a good one. Charming bitches takes too much energy, and the dude they want is the dude who's too powerful to spend energy charming them.

But then the question is: how do you become powerful? The answer is to become Wiley. Become resourceful. Do something new.

Now Paul and Irulan may not be representative of most political marriages, but I don't think it's unrealistic for a man to be indifferent about the sex life of a woman he is not intimately involved with, wife or not; particularly if he has a bound concubine, as did Paul, or a harem of court ladies, as in your example.

No. The word "charm" actually has more to do with magic than power hierarchies. It means to persuade, usually through words, another person. The ability to convince people through words was often looked upon with great mystery, before psychological understanding. That's why so many of the associated words are what they are: charm, spelling (as in casting a spell), and grammar (a corruption of glamor) to point out just a few.

Charm is invaluable anytime one wants to convince, without force, another person into a position. So, while power is perhaps a part of it, charm doesn't mean the absence of power so much as a decision not to use it.
